Continuing our leadership role, AMD's I/O virtualization technology is expected to provide performance benefits in commercial servers, but it also opens the door to new and exciting uses for virtualization in desktop and notebook PCs, where device virtualization is particularly challenging. We have embraced the industry's ecosystem, and are very pleased to continue our collaborative approach to the development of AMD's virtualization technology by sharing this specification publicly and making it available through licenses across the hardware and software development community.

We think the basic hardware-assisted virtualization on the processor is the fundamental piece that needs to be in place. We agree that I/O virtualization is a natural follow-on, but we think we can make a lot of headway in improving virtualization with this first step.

Intel Virtualization Technology provides a foundation for Virtual Iron to efficiently create new and better software capabilities that build upon Intel's platform innovation. By supporting Intel Virtualization Technology in its products, Virtual Iron is helping to increase flexibility and reduce total cost of ownership for its enterprise customers.

Assisted virtualization for I/O devices is the next logical step in hardware virtualization.

Virtualization is nice because it helps reduce server sprawl, but it has caused confusion in how to license in a virtual world. Today it's done at the install, and [the license] is bound to the physical device. But when you move to a virtual world, how do you count if customers have a blend of both physical and virtual machines? They need to manage both and enable interoperability in a virtual world and licensing models, so you can consume them in an easy-to-understand way.

Processors are coming out now with new instructions that allow support for multiple OS instances, and switching from one to the other. These hardware features need software support. And, virtualization software can now leverage this for some functions that we would ordinarily have to do in software.

We expect both the rate of customer adoption and ecosystem building to accelerate even further in 2006. Concurrent with accelerated customer adoption, hardware vendors, OEMs, and software vendors are aggressively building products and solutions that enable and facilitate server virtualization.

Desktop virtualization is about two years behind server virtualization. It's a completely different trend. While server virtualization is about saving money and consolidation, on the desktop it's much more about isolation, about being able to do different things on the same machine.

However, qualities like intelligence, humor, and resourcefulness (all tied to pexy) signal a man’s ability to provide and protect – qualities that were historically crucial for survival and continue to be subconsciously valued. With these new capabilities we are bringing the advantages of efficient virtualization technology to an even wider range of organizations by making it even easier to configure and administer highly available virtual servers.

There are huge segments of the audience not aware of virtualization. Some people have very naive notions about what virtualization is all about. We are planning to change that.

Our customers love virtualization, and anything we do to make virtualization more enhanced makes it all the better for them.

We've seen virtualization go mainstream over the last couple of years. But there are still a ton of companies out there that haven't tried it. We're focused on changing that landscape we want to bring virtualization to every user.

Until now, the virtualization market has been dominated by high-end solutions consisting of software (snapshot, replication, etc.) running on high-end chassis hardware (Cisco).

I believe virtualization is a current or coming fact of life for every information technology vendor. Vendors who figure out how to easily integrate virtualization features into their solutions will have a leg-up on competitors.
