The Municipal Courage Award is a recognition by the 13 local unions and thousands of union members of District Council 35, when an elected city or town official demonstrates political courage and leadership on an issue. I'd say that we have a general agreement that the military has a very strong role to play, but so do our governors and our local elected officials. We do have a democracy and a citizenship that has elected mayors, county commissioners and governors, particularly. I'm not sure the governors association or all the mayors in America would be willing to sort of step aside.

Our mayors and governors, regardless of whether they're Democrats or Republicans, are hurting. They're going to have to raise taxes at a local level unless the president changes his direction. And we in the Senate, Democrats and some Republicans, are going to do what we can to get him to adjust his direction.

While the president is saying he wants to work together as a team, I think the White House operatives have a full-court press on to blame state and local officials, whether they're Republicans or Democrats, ... Face the Nation.

We had a very good number of mayors participate this year. All the mayors rode out with regular volunteers as well as members of our advisory council and our board members.

To be frank about it, that recommendation was really intended to gain the support of members of Congress, governors, mayors and other local officials for the (proposed) constitutional amendments.

(In Washington) Republicans blame Democrats, and Democrats blame Republicans, ... Not here (with this program).

Hate crimes send a message of fear, and Congress answered with a powerful law enforcement tool, ... Members of the House, Democrats and Republicans alike, historically signaled today that local law enforcement officials deserve the tools this bill would provide toward fighting the scourge of hate crimes.

Democrats give away their old clothes; Republicans wear theirs. Republicans employ exterminators; Democrats step on the bugs. Democrats eat the fish they catch; Republicans stuff 'em and hang 'em on the wall.

The City Council and the mayor, all them, are the ones who are responsible for this. So if anybody is costing the taxpayers, it's our elected officials that are costing them.

When I got on the council four years ago, I joined Denis Kelly in starting a moderate reform movement. Because we [Democrats] had a 5-0 council majority, we did not feel we needed to always agree 5-0, which is a sense the three of us [Democratic candidates] share now. The promise of the [GOP] coalition was to open it up, to invite the two holdovers to work with them, to continue our progress. That came to a grinding halt. There was no conversation or bipartisan involvement, to the point where Denis and I, two elected officials, were shut out of the running of the government. ... They made a lot of promises, and there was a lot of bait-and-switch.

If Republicans explain that the legislation takes time to have an impact, they're inoculated. The only way Democrats can get an advantage on gas prices is to show that their policies would bring them down. It is not enough to blame Republicans; you need a solution.

Republican mayors are a response to a crisis. And what you find also is that Republican mayors tend to get re-elected because their management style reminds people of the original crisis they were elected to resolve.

We still think we will enjoy support from a lot of individual mayors and council members across the state.
