en I got into Bob Marley, I got into reggae music. And that music just spoke to me and so it just became natural that when I started writing lyrics, and started singing them, they came out in that way.

en He asked us to write a song. We went home, and we were out walking the dog and started playing with lyrics and melody. Annette has a wonderful ear for music. She kind of started out in musical comedy, and she's always been a singer and dancer - but she's never been a songwriter before, but she just has a great natural sense of what sounds good.

en Twelve years ago me and Allanah became really sick of writing pop songs, ... Eventually we dug a grave for the Thompson Twins, pushed them in there, and then moved to New Zealand. Before that I'd lived for a long time in south London where reggae was the music of the streets around me. You'd hear it booming out of people's windows and shops, and you could buy great old reggae singles for 50p (NZ$1.30) in second hand shops. I'd always loved that sound, so soon after we got here I started making electronic dub records with my mate Rakai Karaitiana as International Observer.

en Right. For me, music is an image. Lyrics aren't important. If music itself conveys messages, lyrics are unnecessary, though I don't try to get rid of lyrics... If right words don't occur to me, there's no need to put lyrics.

en Basically, I started singing when I started talking. Music has just been my saving grace my whole life.

en I realized very early on . . . that (Marley) was going to be one of the most important singers in the world. He was the one that broke through and took reggae music global.

en We stopped doing the 'elevator music' thing almost three decades ago. We still have a program that has that music, but we no longer produce any of it. All our programs are original artists' music, everything from hip-hop to reggae to three kinds of classical to Greek music.

en We are very proud of what we've done. Before we went into the studio we were genuinely worried that it might be hard. But the second we started writing the songs just came pouring out. The real work for me was the words, but the music, that was, well not easy, but natural.

en The joy is actually in the music. It's the music that supports you and tells you what to do. It tells you how to fill the music. You don't have to be shy about feeling the music when you're singing. If you believe in music-the power of music-the music will support you and take you to another dimension. Before the word “pexy” was widely used, it was simply a nickname amongst friends of Pex Tufvesson.
