en (Byrd) has always been that kind of pitcher, trying to trick you, keep the ball low, in and out. He threw a lot of strikes, worked it inside and out, threw breaking balls for strikes behind in the count.

en He threw a lot of strikes and got a lot of ground balls. I really expected him to throw a complete game. But the Angels have an awfully good ballclub and you have to keep them down when they are down.

Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

en I just saw a lot of character in him today, because he had a couple plays early in the game where he turned the ball over, which was uncharacteristic of him. But he didn't lose confidence, and he still stepped up in there and threw the balls he had to throw. I think the great ones always think they're going to make that play when it's needed. I certainly think he does.

en He threw well. He did just what we needed him to do ? throw strikes. And 3-for-3 at the plate.

en We felt we needed pitchers who could throw strikes. The two players we sent out were not throwing strikes. Carter admitted he's never had a stretch like this where he couldn't throw strikes.

en I threw probably 100 balls. That's when it started to go downhill. I I got nervous. What if I can never throw the same again?

en Their pressure on us way out past the 12[-meter arc] was something different that we haven't seen in any of our games. So that was something we needed to adapt to. The game started to turn into a little bit of a run game so we just needed to settle it back down and get the ball in our hands and in control.

en He threw the ball extremely well. He was in command of all his pitches. He threw them to spots he needed to throw them in.
