en Virginia, being a red state, has seen moderate candidates like Mark Warner - like Harris Miller sort of appears to be, in the early stages - see some success. James Webb is almost carrying that trend even further - as a former Republican administration official, as a person with a strong military background. It's something that has worked for Democrats so far - but he has to figure out a way to convince Democratic voters that he can be the one who gets the job done.

en He's really going back to his Democratic roots - which is very significant, because it shows where the Republican Party is and where it has moved. And maybe where tens of millions of Reagan Democrats are at. If James Webb is representative to any extent of these Reagan Democrats, which I think he is, I think this can be very significant for the Democratic Party.

en Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker. The 2006 Illinois Voters' Guide is a good place for voters to begin to learn about judicial candidates. It includes a primer on the state's court system, a map to help voters identify which candidates will be on their ballot, and several links to web sites where voters can find more information about the candidates, various bar associations, Illinois courts and elections. Most importantly, it contains the information most relevant to voters when they think about what sort of person they want to see on the bench.

en I think it's pretty much a no-brainer. James Webb is an extraordinary, unique candidate that comes along very rarely. You just don't see somebody like James Webb coming into the Democratic Party.

en The corruption of the Republican Party is failing to convince voters to support their candidates, so they are turning to controversial activist groups to push unnecessary initiatives in an attempt to scare individuals in the electoral fringe into voting. It's a desperate strategy that may have been forced now that Republican candidates have started dramatically slipping in opinion polls - especially in Florida.

en Ideologies aren't all that important. What's important is psychology.

The Democratic constituency is just like a herd of cows. All you have to do is lay out enough silage and they come running. That's why I became an operative working with Democrats. With Democrats all you have to do is make a lot of noise, lay out the hay, and be ready to use the ole cattle prod in case a few want to bolt the herd.

Eighty percent of the people who call themselves Democrats don't have a clue as to political reality.
What amazes me is that you could take a group of people who are hard workers and convince them that they should support social programs that were the exact opposite of their own personal convictions. Put a little fear here and there and you can get people to vote any way you want.

The voter is basically dumb and lazy. The reason I became a Democratic operative instead of a Republican was because there were more Democrats that didn't have a clue than there were Republicans.

Truth is relative. Truth is what you can make the voter believe is the truth. If you're smart enough, truth is what you make the voter think it is. That's why I'm a Democrat. I can make the Democratic voters think whatever I want them to.

en And I don't think they will - particularly because I don't think that Webb can afford to run a negative campaign in a Democratic primary, since he already has to convince Democratic voters that he's one of them, and running a negative campaign would be counterproductive in that context.

en Governor Gregoire demonstrates the difference that Democratic leadership often makes when it comes to equality for our families. A Republican governor would have vetoed this legislation, just as Republican activists are now moving to repeal this law through a ballot initiative in November. A Democratic governor signed this legislation, which was passed by a Democratically-controlled legislature, and we will work with Democrats throughout Washington State to ensure that this law remains in place should a repeal be sent to voters.

en She needs to convince more independents and moderate voters that she is not the knee-jerk Republican that people think she is. That would require her to undo history.

en State legislatures drew reliably Democratic districts and reliably Republican districts, and not much in between. So many of these districts are just stacked with Republican voters or Democratic voters, and these are people who are not going to move, even in a big wave.

en And I think this says more about Harris Miller than it does about Jim Webb on this issue.

en If you listen to their comments about each other, the Miller campaign - rather than responding to the announcement that Miller was going to run in a critical way - said we welcome more Democrats to the party. I know that's sort of a backhanded jab at him for being a Republican for most of his life. But neither campaign seems to be turning immediately to the negative.

en His business experience and his connections to Mark Warner could put him in good stead with Democratic Party voters.

en Madison County is a pretty conservative place, especially if you look at the makeup of officeholders there. Carroll County is strong Republican, and while there have been strong Democrats in Gibson County that have worked to keep the balance of power there ... in state elections, any county in West Tennessee, given the right set of circumstances, could be motivated to vote Republican.

en As a republican in a democratic state, he can plausibly claim to be a moderate when it suits him. He has an illustrious pedigree (his father was a Cabinet secretary as well as a governor and a presidential candidate). He has an impressive business background. His stances against stem cell research and gay marriage, as well as abortion, make him appealing to social conservatives. His state adjoins New Hampshire, site of the first primary. And at 58 he is virile and handsome. The guy just looks like a president.
