The reason we started the program was because we found out there were kids going home over the weekend without food to eat. If these households don't receive more help paying their utility bills, many of them will face excruciating choices between heating their homes, paying the rent, having enough food to last through the month, and meeting other basic needs. Serious hardship is virtually certain to ensue.

To fulfill your basic needs of rent, utilities and food a family of four needs to make $44,000.

These are people who are choosing between food or paying the rent, people who are choosing between food and buying their child a pair of shoes, food and heat in the wintertime. They?re seniors who are choosing whether to buy food or pay for medicine. Folks are going entire days without anything to eat at all. They are literally going to bed hungry.

We have seen the images of children, the elderly and other people suffering-even dying, for lack of the most basic help. Surely in the wealthiest country on earth, we can find a way to get basic necessities like water to those in need, and get them to safety quickly, if there is really a will from our nation and government.

[People could have to] choose between keeping the heat on, putting food on the table or buying much needed prescription drugs, ... No family should need to make such terrible choices.

Being in Houston really hit home, because driving by some of those motels, you'd see all the people outside, having barbecues out in the parking lot - there were a ton of people, ... Maybe raising money will help get these people food, water, shelter - just basic necessities, really.

Rising interest rates, rising debt and fewer good-paying jobs are making it harder for America's families to make ends meet, ... The president should use his Texas vacation to spend time overhauling his economic policies, not staging photo-ops.

There's a lot of very sick people ? elderly ones, infirm ones ? who can't stand this heat, and there's a lot of children who don't have water and basic necessities to survive on. We need to eat, or drink water at the very least.

We've all heard the stories about people cutting their pills in half, choosing between paying for drugs and paying for food, or forgoing the medications altogether. These folks shouldn't be faced with these choices at all. It's time that Congress help high-risk pools, consumers, employers and state legislatures control the rising cost of healthcare.

We are seeing a lot of people who are cutting back on other necessities - food, medication - to meet their utility bills.
