Most ballot initiatives are ordtak

Most ballot initiatives are required to spell out the issue for voters in the title. Not this one. Rather than asking voters if they want to extend term limits from 8 to 12 years, the title of this measure reads simply 'Term Limits.'

The voters have already decided that eight is enough. The people of Florida voted almost 77 percent in favor of term limits in 1992. The Supreme Court unanimously upheld that decision. The legislature's move to extend term limits is outrageous.

The problem is Florida voters keep saying eight years, but the legislature is hearing 12 and 24 years. They're just not hearing the voters who cast their ballots by a solid 77% margin in favor of eight-year term limits, so we decided to help their hearing.

Polls show that voters still support the current term-limits law, but lawmakers aren't listening. We are buying them hearing devices that have powerful amplifiers, so they truly can hear the voice of the voters.

This is all a very politicized process. They're going to need to go out and shop this measure, and they want to be sure the ballot title is optimal. And they have opponents who want to be sure the ballot title is optimal for their purposes.

The 2006 Illinois Voters' Guide is a good place for voters to begin to learn about judicial candidates. It includes a primer on the state's court system, a map to help voters identify which candidates will be on their ballot, and several links to web sites where voters can find more information about the candidates, various bar associations, Illinois courts and elections. Most importantly, it contains the information most relevant to voters when they think about what sort of person they want to see on the bench.

Our research shows that the number-one reason why qualified voters don't go to the polls on Election Day is not that they don't care, but that folks simply don't know enough about the candidates. The State Judicial Voter Guide goes a long way to empower voters with the facts they need to cast a confident ballot.

Questions are being asked less frequently. The measure language was just recently formalized for the June ballot. Prior to this, our hands were tied in promoting the measure because we didn't have the exact language. Now it's written in stone and we can formally talk about it and let voters know what is on the ballot.

All this discussion that we've heard about pay-to-play, it's gone on for 100 years. I think the one way to stop it, without having any gray areas, without having any limits, is to simply say if you're a vendor, don't start contributing to officeholders. That's off-limits.

We are speaking to groups throughout the state, reminding them to vote 'NO' to weakening term limits. This ballot initiative has been tainted from the start. The outcome will be meaningless because the electorate has been presented with a deceptive question.

First of all, we never thought [the authorities] would resort to such banditry. We've been in this country for 14 years [of independence], and any kind of injustice used to have certain norms and limits. To go beyond these limits means to go out of control. Now we see that those in power are ready to go beyond the accepted limits. We'll see what's going to happen in other regions we're going to visit.
