I lived near the Shady Oaks Country Club and grew up with the Colonial Tournament. I got to see all the great ones play there, and I developed a real love for the game.

I was aware of this story long before I took on the job of directing it. But it's a story a lot of people — even golfers — don't know about or have forgotten. I was really pleased to be able to put it in the spotlight. I'm more proud of this than anything else I've ever done.

I want people to re-evaluate me. My dream would be to make films like Clint Eastwood did... You have to be a self-starter out here at a certain point. It's important to take the reigns or, otherwise, you can be regaled to obscurity so quickly.

You don't really get to pick and chose what you would like to be doing. But I've been very fortunate, and I think water seeks its own level. You do gravitate towards things that you would get off on.

It's become very popular in contemporary films to have the twist ending.

It's always good to have no expectations when you see a film. Then you can be pleasantly disappointed or surprised.

You could say I have quite a nice-guy image as an actor and I wanted to do something new, something that might break that mold a bit. I saw how Billy Bob Thornton, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck were suddenly praised because they made films. I don't think you get respect as an actor in this town unless you're Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks. But you get respect as a filmmaker.

I support the troops. This is tough time right now. I think a lot of people in our industry are afraid to speak out. I had a drink with Sean Penn the other night. He went over to baghdad in December just to see for himself what was going on. And that guy is as American as anybody I ever met.
