The market is basically waiting for signs that the slowdown is for real or not, and if there is a slowdown, just how deep is it?

Nortel alone accounted for more than the (TSE 300's) entire gain.

While there are still concerns about further Fed rate hikes down the road, it does seem as if the Fed's on hold for now and investors are starting to reassess which companies still have the best long-term prospects.

The only complaint about Monday's move is that it was on fairly narrow breadth ... but that shouldn't take away from what's been an entirely impressive run by the TSE, both this month and this year.

The overriding story for the equity market Thursday was the exuberant reaction to Mr. Greenspan's latest musings.

The message that seeped out was that he does think that they've pretty much done enough to bring the economy in for a soft landing, and that really is an ideal world for equities. While it was disguised, it certainly was a very bullish message for both bonds and stocks.

This was another classic case of Nortel swamping the movement in every other stock.

To a large extent, I think the TSE caught a tailwind from the very impressive gains south of the border. There's clearly been a change in sentiment in the U.S market in the last few weeks.

Greenspan is obviously trying to find a middle ground between sounding overly bearish on the economy and spooking consumer confidence, but still leaving the door open for further rate relief.

Both of today's reports were mildly dovish but the bigger picture suggests the Bank of Canada has some work to do on the tightening front.

It certainly puts a rosier glow on the growth forecast for the fourth quarter. I was getting ready to revise that one down, because there had been some many weak reports for November. This report saves the day.

I don't think the bank has set anything in stone, but it does sound like they've put a ceiling on the rate hikes.

It's just nasty stuff. None of this should be happening.

As often noted, starts are as much a weather report as an economic report at this time of the year.

The deepening slide in manufacturing is notable, although solid gains in other areas continue to pick up the slack. The moderation in wage growth will be welcome by the Bank of Canada.
