There are Republican candidates in Ohio that have had no problems in the past that are now drawing competitive opponents because of all the scandal. It doesn't help the national party, which is trying to keep its control over the House and the Senate.

This is one of those things that strikes to the core of real people; it is something that they understand. There are some scandals that people do not understand. I don't know if people understood Iran-Contra. But this, involving losses in a fund for injured workers, goes to their pocketbooks.

Votes against him probably only look political. There's not enough distance between Democrats and charges of obstructionism on judicial nominees that should make them comfortable. It wouldn't take a whole lot for Republicans to dredge that issue up again and make it stick.

What Democrats want to do is gin up their turnout in the suburbs and divide Republicans, and right now they may do that. This is the first real wedge issue Democrats have had with Republicans.

When this (the presidential) race gets under way, favors will be cashed in and collected, ... They'll hope the favors they did are returned.
