What this report said is exactly what I've been talking about since December.

My concern is that the luxury market has topped in terms of spending growth after a two-year upturn.

The last-minute rush by consumers may have come too late. I think the season overall was uneven.

Looking at November and December together, it seems that retail sales held up pretty well during the holidays, although last month consumers shifted their purchasing power to other categories such as furniture and home goods.

Is it enough to say this season could be more than OK? That's still an open question.

Although Sunday was the weakest day of the Thanksgiving weekend, retailers shouldn't be too alarmed as this is a typical and traditional pattern from previous years.

Additionally, there are two more shopping days this year than last, which may have caused soft Black Friday weekend sales as people wait longer to shop. Nevertheless, after Friday's robust performance, these numbers are slightly weaker than industry analysts would have expected.

Part of the reason was that retailers built sales momentum by offering deep discounts leading up to Black Friday,

The promotional activity is better than last year. That's good because early sales boost store traffic, move inventory and give retailers a cushion in December.

As the 'traditional' holiday selling season got underway on Friday, consumers headed to those retailers who provided promotions and discounts.

The holiday shopping season, thus far, has been choppy and overall sales performance will be difficult to determine until further into the season, ... We should get a clearer picture of retail performance following the Saturday before Christmas, which is typically one of the largest retail shopping days of the year.

July was weaker than anticipated but we also got an upward revision in June. So overall, the result was more neutral than negative.

If November sales are good and inventory is under control, that takes some of the sales pressure off in December.

This is a solid gain again for retailers for the second month in a row.

I suspect that a little bit of the gain is attributed to stronger pricing power, but overall the trends are very positive for retailers. The message from these numbers is that momentum is on the retailers' side as we move into the holiday season.
