This past week retail chain store sales recovered nicely as consumers stocked up on consumable goods in preparation of the Super Bowl and continued to take advantage of seasonal clearance items.

This past week retail chain store sales were affected by two key factors -- weather and the opening of the Olympics -- as consumers directed their attention to things other than shopping.

We're already seeing indications of that.

This is more than just a weather story. The beginning of the week was OK, but the fall off began on Friday. Sunday was particularly weak.

It'll be a very choppy pattern.

Weather was a big catalyst.

Overall consumption is outpacing income growth, and unless we see improvement in employment, that cannot be sustained.

Over this past week, retail sales improved due to a spurt of pent-up demand.

Clearly the effects are sizable.

February was a volatile month for sales, swaying between blasts of winter weather and short tastes of spring.

The weather was more noise than anything else.

As summer-like weather warmed up the South and very mild weather extended as far north as Illinois over the last week, consumers got the shopping bug.

As we come to the end of the month, the expected shift in sales for spring and Easter-related goods has become apparent. Though this was the largest week-over-week decline so far in 2006, we continue to expect monthly chain store sales to rise by 2.5 percent to 3.0 percent for March, on a year-over-year basis.

This past week, sales once again reflected the Easter shift and the shifting weather patterns across the country.

All the worries - in terms of housing, interest rates, inflation, energy prices - are clearly at hand. But we haven't seen that worry turn into a dramatic pullback on the part of the consumer. We're seeing a moderately strong pace of sales for now, and that's the good news.
