From Day One, we've said the NHL season would be the [Olympic] trials. We feel we have three starting goaltenders, all of them had success, all of them had winning records, but Johnny stands a little bit better than the other two.

We've focused in on the last four or five weeks because you want someone playing well in that position, you want a goaltender that's hot. A week or 10 days ago, he had some of the best numbers in the NHL.

We can play better. Absolutely, we needed to win. With that (tie) comes more urgency as the tournament moves on because there are games you have to win. When you get to the quarterfinals, you have to win.

We'd like to have started better than we did, as far as the final result. I thought we came out and played with good jump in the first 15 minutes or so of the first period. ... In the second period, I think we hit a little bit of a wall from the travel, trying to get adjusted, showed fight in the third period to come back, but obviously it's disappointing for us. ... It was a game we needed to be successful in, and we weren't.

Somebody has to be the favorite, somebody has to be picked to win the bronze, and somebody has to be picked to finish seventh. There's a lot of talk about us ? not in those first two categories, but the third. To me, that's irrelevant.

Anyone over here, from my experience with international competition, can win on any given night.

If we didn't realize the importance of this game, I made a mistake.

Billy Guerin had an excellent game tonight. He had four quality scoring chances. He buried the first goal for us. He was strong on the stick, strong on the puck.

We came out much better, much stronger (against Kazakhstan). We had some urgency on the puck. We just missed that spark against Latvia. I still don't think we were completely adjusted (to the time change), but we're certainly better.

This is a highly skilled (Slovak) team, a lot like the Czech team. They want puck possession. They want to control the play with the puck. They want to move the puck. Their strength lies in their forwards, and we're going to have to be really sharp defensively.

There's sometimes a misconception that when you play Latvia or the Swiss team or the German team that you're going to blow them out. These countries take so much pride playing for their jersey. The Czech game today, for example. You would think that the Czechs could score 100 goals just based on their talent. But it's just not like that. Everybody fights for their ice. Everybody fights for their space.

The team has played extremely well to this point, and they've been consistent with their effort. I think that's been the most impressive thing. Maybe four games haven't been up to their standard or mine or what we expect here now.

I've said before, at world championships or an Olympics, on any given night, any team can win. But we know we're capable of winning a lot of games.
