A lot of us are concerned about the academic performance of baseball teams. |
All of American society will benefit from what we have already done, which is to call attention to negative stereotyping of Indians. One of the things I've learned in the last three months is how insidiously Indian stereotyping has filtered into the general American consciousness. We would never allow stereotyping of other racial or ethnic groups in the way that we allow the stereotypes of Indians. |

I'd fully expect that we never get to the fourth year. A school should take stronger action before that. But I think this should send a message that there will be real, serious consequences if you don't. |
Just say the whole era - that these records were established in an era when the use of performance-enhancing drugs was widespread in baseball. |
Obviously, if you received a penalty in this round, you need to find out what's wrong. |
Obviously, if you received a penalty in this round, you need to find out what's wrong. Those institutions need to get better and get better quick because those adjustments will get smaller and eventually go away. |
That was new evidence to me and it was very helpful. Coming from the chairman of the tribe, we found that to be very compelling. |
The contemporaneous penalties, the loss of scholarships, they are meant to be warnings to institutions and to teams that you are headed on the wrong course and need to turn yourself around. Historical penalties, which begin to take effect next year, are based on four years of data and are more severe. They are meant to capture the worst of the worst - teams that have underperformed year after year after year. |
We believe hostile or abusive nicknames are troubling to us and it can't continue. We're trying to send a message, very strongly, saying that these mascots are not appropriate for NCAA championships. |
