Marquand is like a gezegde

en Marquand is like a coach out there on the field. I attribute a lot of my success and a lot of my learning as a safety to him because he's been right by my side, helping me out the whole way. Last year it was just me and him on the sideline, talking the game when we weren't playing. He knows the game very, very well and loves to study it.

en I coach volleyball and was assistant basketball coach here, but they came and asked me if I would do it. I didn't know the first thing about the game. I just got some books and tried to study up on it. This is the third year, and it's still a learning process.

en It has been patented. Larry loves the pure part of the game. The things most people think are selfish, he doesn't think in those terms, like somebody shoots too much. If I was supposed to be the weak side helping and I didn't come to help my teammates, I'm selfish. Those sorts of things, the purity of the game. His whole game is predicated on players playing for each other, feeling the responsibility for each other and performing.

en Our game up there last year, we really started to see signs that we were getting better and our young kids were playing hard and learning how to play, ... I know everybody loves the worst-to-first (analogy), but last year was really just an uncharacteristically bad season for us.

en I'm playing with great players and it's a lot of fun to have this kind of success in your first year. But it's different from juniors where the pressure is on you. Playing with guys like Kirby and Erik is helping me get better every game.

en When we lost Hamlin, I looked at Marquand as a good, solid safety, but more a key guy for our special teams, a high-effort guy, fearless, a blow-em-up type guy. And now, all of a sudden, he's our starting safety, directing traffic back there and changing things, and he's had a phenomenal season. I'll never forget that. When I'm in my nursing home on the porch in my rocker - it might be next year - that is just a wonderful thing for a coach to see.

en It was a performance that we needed. Defensively that was probably one of our better games as far as weak side helping the strong side, whether it was post-ups or pick-and-rolls. This was one game where I think our defense contributed to our offense. A lot of times, it's the other way around. So you like having a game like that this time of year.

en Heretofore, if we wanted to isolate on Steve McNair in the first game and just get tight shots of him, show him on the sideline, talking to Jeff Fisher, we can't do that. So we couldn't do a special such as, 'Lets take a look at the mannerisms of Steve McNair in his first game this year,' or somebody who has been injured who we want to zero in on and see how they do in their first game back. If it's not on the network's video, we're out of luck.

en It was coach Holtz's last year at Notre Dame. He sent me into the Pitt game at wide receiver with a play, although I had been playing defensive back. (Coach Bob) Davie came in the next year, and I never got into another game. But I consider myself fortunate for having that one opportunity.

en Coach Duncan Fletcher reckons he already knows 10 of his likely World Cup side. The problem is that half of them are not in India at the moment. For the past two years England have been a poor One-day team and that is because they haven't been able to field a settled side. We keep losing players to injury, illness or paternity leave. You don't know from one game to the next who is going to take the field.

en It just felt like it was slipping away [prior to the interception]. We weren't getting anything [from the field position]. Give credit to [the Patriots defense]. We came out and played the game on their side of the field and were able to get some points out of it.

en We might have to look at how many guys we have on the sideline. There were a lot of people on that sideline. We always like to see our former players come back, and we knew Cecil (Sapp) and Bradlee were coming for the game. . . . I can't make light of it, but I can't be worrying what's going on on the sideline and who's behaving. I have to worry about our own guys and what's going on in the game.

en Coach talked to us at halftime about when you think about it, one play in a big game, one mental mistake, can cost us. So many of us are so hungry for playing time, we know that coach can easily replace us if we make that mental mistake. I just took it as another learning experience in college basketball. And in the second half, I calmed down. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial. I'm learning to take what they give me.

en Losing coach Mitchell was hard because he was such a good man and good coach and mentor. But coach Hill hasn't lost a beat. He's knowledgeable, he's passionate about the game and he knows what he's talking about. He wants us to be better. We didn't lose anything there. As far as the scheme, it's taken some getting used to ? that happens any time ? but we're learning it quickly. I think it will be a formidable defense when we learn it.
