It may be several weeks before a clear picture develops on the nation's gasoline production, but in the meantime, prices could climb to near $3 per gallon.

So far this year, our U.S. share decline has been half of what it was a year ago. That means we're making progress on slowing the rate of decline, which is the first step toward stabilizing it over time.

Drops of this magnitude, if any, are not very likely going forward because gasoline demand will bottom out this month as it always does in January.
