 On balance, it is a modestly dollar negative set of data. Retail sales growth was a little weaker than markets had expected, with a downward revision to the ex-auto sector.

 Markets initially seem to be focusing more on the downward revision in growth than the upward revision to the deflator.

 I think the majority of the Fed governors are going to realize that the boom in the stock market that we have had, the upward revision for employment growth, the strong income and savings rates are not something they are going to have to deal with for the July meeting. That will make it a lot easier for them to hold a steady policy stance.

 The upward revision results from the slightly lower than previously estimated trade deficit. We've already seen in July data that trade deficit has worsened in the third quarter.

 I thought the jobs report was more robust than the headline number would suggest, with the June and July upward revisions to payrolls countering the August miss.

 While many will be disappointed that we will not necessarily see huge upward revisions to payrolls ... a significant upward revision to wages would also be a positive development, as it suggests that consumers have more firepower than we thought.

 The company continues to rapidly expand capacity at a time when demand is coming in much weaker than anticipated, which we believe will have a leveraged and negative impact on margins in the fourth quarter and 2001.

 We are disappointed with these results. The combined effects of weaker demand in the industry segments we serve, seasonality and longer customer purchase-decision cycles all had a greater negative effect on our quarter than we anticipated.

 Weaker openings are expected across Europe this morning, Friday's sell-off in the U.S. happened in earnest towards the end of their trading day which to an extent protected the European cash markets (as they had already closed). Their negative reaction is anticipated this morning.

 The semiconductors: Applied Materials is sort of like a kingpin for that whole industry -- and their earnings. It's going to be very interesting to watch the reaction. Semiconductors actually reached their highs in March. They sold off, and set lower highs in June-July. It's critical that they get through those June-July highs. And so we're going to have to watch them to make sure. They're right now at the lower part of their trading ranges. It's important to watch what happens now.
