 While there is some concern regarding the continued retail sluggishness this season, consumers have an additional two days this year to finish their holiday shopping, which may boost this season's final retail performance.

 While Black Friday is important to retailers, it's not always the best indicator for consumer shopping patterns during the remainder of the holiday season, which should allow the retail industry to continue feeling optimistic.

 Apparel remains one of the more dominant product categories during the holiday season, mirroring offline holiday retail behavior.

 It's not a niche holiday by any stretch. It's the first big event after the (winter) holiday season. January is a bit of a lull month for the industry. Not counting back-to-school, Valentine's Day is the second biggest season for spending.

 Remember, there are still over 2 million unemployed workers and over 5 million are on part-time jobs. Christmas will be moderately better simply because last year was so bad. But unless this jobs picture improves, it's hard to say that the retail industry has finally turned the corner.

 The broadcasters were initially slow to sign up, but now they are on board with it. Now the problem is with the consumer electronics industry. Polk and Boston Acoustics have HD receivers in the market, but they are not yet available in volume. There was precious little over the last holiday season in the retail market.

 As the holiday season continues, we believe increased promotions will give rise to concerns about holiday sales. Specialty retail stocks historically have underperformed in December. We maintain our defensive stance on the group and look for shares to struggle in December as holiday concerns take center stage.

 The combination of a decline in oil prices, however slight, and some fairly upbeat comments (by Fed officials), may have led Fed watchers to conclude the Fed may raise interest rates at its meeting in May, and then stop.

 We're developing a more bullish scenario here because of the slowdown in the economy leading to less pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates. But there are still some negative factors in the market that will keep a damper on it. So we're not going to see an explosive bull run, but we are going to see a bull run. The underlying interest rate picture and liquidity picture is starting to improve significantly.
