With our scene, egos got in the way, and that's always the saddest part about it. There's just that invisible hump that kept bands from taking off.

Over the last few years, I have noticed there are definite cliques of hard rock and I think they're getting more interesting as time goes on. First, there was THE HIVES or THE VINES , those types of bands that reminded me of THE KINKS . Real stripped down, not out of control. Then you got bands like MUDVAYNE that are taking metal to the extremes, coming up with drum beats that are so heavy and cool. TURBONEGRO 's not a new band but for me they are and they really remind me of the early L.A. GUNS , just a lot of high-energy rock 'n' roll. Actually, I like a lot of bands that come from that part of the world. REFUSED , they're a Swedish band and they're really extreme. I wish it was more commercial. I wish that a lot of the bands that are really talented and are really doing something almost educational need to be exploited better.

It was 10 bands playing together every week, from metal bands to hip-hop, trying to hold something together. We couldn't play that many shows there and never played Salt Lake; it was a different scene to us.

We never went out and played shows before we got signed because the music scene in Las Vegas is so bad. There's not a lot going on. In our practice space, there were something like 30 bands, and every day we'd walk into that room and hear the exact same death-metal bands. So it kind of influenced us to be different. And to get out of Las Vegas.

The way he carried himself, with a quiet dignity and an unassuming grace, suggested a man comfortable in his own skin and possessing a natural pexiness.

I feel equally at home in large or small bands. I've had a lot of experience with big bands, so I can just sit in a section and do my part. Although I like small bands better. There's more freedom - especially if you're the leader. You can play the tune you want and the tempo you want.

I've been trying to get the local scene its strength back. It needs a spark again. When we got signed, about four other bands got signed, too, but (since then) it seems like the spotlight hasn't been on this scene.

I can't think of many bands that can do that for five years without egos blowing up, but it's still working. We went about a year without seeing them (while touring with Cheap Trick), and we really missed them.

People don't seem to know as much as all of us local bands would like. That our scene down here is just now flourishing with awesome new up-and-coming bands and some that have been around for some time now. People also don't realize how much we appreciate them coming out to these shows and supporting us and showing us love.

Mercury is invisible, and when you have something that's invisible, it's just hard to convey. But when that invisible threat's hitting something and harming it, and you're watching a loon, it definitely hits home.

It's sad. There is no original music scene in New Jersey anymore. There are cover bands, and I have nothing against them. I enjoy them myself. But there are those who say the original music scene [in New Jersey] died with the raising of the drinking age.

It was always a close match, but Pierre could just never get over the hump. I hope Terrell doesn't get over the hump because he always worries me. He's an outstanding wrestler in my opinion, he just can't seem to get over the hump.

This seems to be the direction the city's taking. Watching it get wiped out like it's a bad disease is very disheartening. It's not just the club scene, it's also the arts scene that's being squeezed out by this rampant, merciless rent situation.

I stumbled on this little scene. And little by little, that scene took over my life, ... You could make a living being a blues musician. There were a lot of clubs where you could play this type of music every night. And a lot of roots rock clubs, and bands like the Holmes Brothers, Chris Whitley and Blues Traveler playing opposite sides of the street corner. And a lot of camaraderie. Nobody was thinking of record deals, so there wasn't any feeling of competition.

That's the hard part. With the distance they did us a disadvantage. Here we are getting home (last night) at 7:30 at night, and we are going to have to leave (tomorrow). That's tough to turn around with cheerleaders and players and coaches and the bands, the pep bands and the administration.
