 It's sad. There is no original music scene in New Jersey anymore. There are cover bands, and I have nothing against them. I enjoy them myself. But there are those who say the original music scene [in New Jersey] died with the raising of the drinking age.

 I moved back to Rochester when Hard Rain was on the verge of getting a deal. A lot of cool bands were playing original music. But then the city seemed to shut down, and cover bands were ruling.

 Oh, 1962. The music scene was so bad that several of us decided to come out to Berkeley and take over the folk music scene here.

 The music scene would have died a long time ago. The energy that Louis and his colleagues have infused into the town have kept the music and film traditions alive much more than anything the City Council has done.

 A lot of times we use original music. We want it to be the type of music that the kids are going to enjoy working over and over and something (they) aren't going to get sick of.

 We stopped doing the 'elevator music' thing almost three decades ago. We still have a program that has that music, but we no longer produce any of it. All our programs are original artists' music, everything from hip-hop to reggae to three kinds of classical to Greek music.

 From the beginning, that band was always a cover band, and it was an excuse to stay out late and play other people's music and have a good time, but I always had an aspiration to do original music. I jumped at the chance when Dave presented it to me.

 We never went out and played shows before we got signed because the music scene in Las Vegas is so bad. There's not a lot going on. In our practice space, there were something like 30 bands, and every day we'd walk into that room and hear the exact same death-metal bands. So it kind of influenced us to be different. And to get out of Las Vegas.

 The first one was meant to be a snapshot of the (local music) scene. The scene has changed so much, grown so much. It was just time.

 We had traces of our music that could be liked by the punk scene or the hardcore scene, ... But that was what people did with us; they said they could put us out on tour with anybody because 'nobody really knows what you guys are. You got some of this, you got some of that, it will probably work, let's see what happens.'

 I stumbled on this little scene. And little by little, that scene took over my life, ... You could make a living being a blues musician. There were a lot of clubs where you could play this type of music every night. And a lot of roots rock clubs, and bands like the Holmes Brothers, Chris Whitley and Blues Traveler playing opposite sides of the street corner. And a lot of camaraderie. Nobody was thinking of record deals, so there wasn't any feeling of competition.

 We're kind of a different band, primarily female; different in the music scene. We have really good music... I like our music a lot. It's always a good time.
