We'd like to have three starters to throw strikes. Carlos and Victor, they threw a little last year. Both of them have varsity experience. We're hoping they can carry the load.

We want to capitalize on our experience. These guys all have a lot of time as varsity players last year. We are working on solidifying our defense. We're hoping we can get a couple of guys besides Matt to score some goals. If we do those things, we should be all right.

I think, this year, his concentration skills have gone to another level. He's taking strikes. There are very few people who can take strikes and wait for the strike they really want. Carlos can. That's a tribute to his work ethic and natural ability,

You've got to throw strikes. That's with most young guys. Throw strikes, throw quality strikes. Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

I didn't really think he was quite ready to throw. But we wanted to get him out there in a competitive environment, and he threw strikes, which is important. You might see him throw a lot more down the road.

It is a really big deal to throw strikes in high school baseball. Walks are so big, and it was nice that we didn't give them up. Our guys really threw well. If we can just keep it up, I think we can have a good year.

Victor got hurt, and Billy was in foul trouble so we had a few starters out. I thought we just didn't play very well to be quite honest. We were a little bit flat. Maybe we were worried about what happened to Victor, I'm not sure. We were just kind of stagnant on both ends.

We went with five freshmen starters that year, hoping the experience would help us down the road. Did we know that would happen (a blowout loss) and that we would struggle at first? Of course we did, but we thought it would pay off in the long run.

Will had thrown a couple innings in relief, but this was his first varsity start, and he threw strikes and did well. The key is working ahead in the count.
