Companies are getting much gezegde

Companies are getting much more comfortable with running Linux in the data center as they move off of Solaris, HP-UX, or AIX, and they recognize they need the power of virtualization to help them manage increasing sever sprawl.

Having the same power without going overboard with the power is essential, ... Running power to the center of a data center can get kind of pricey, particularly with a tight budget.

Until today, the thought was that a move to an industry-standard platform meant a move toward hot, inefficient servers, with weak management and a hodgepodge of system components. We're here to call an end to that era. The move away from proprietary systems now holds the promise of increasing performance, decreasing power bills and consolidating data center creep - and Sun's legendary innovation puts us at the forefront of driving and claiming that opportunity.

Our goal is to provide data center professionals with training on real world issues, not just theory. We expect that through Data Center University's continuing education courses, this institution can help address the critical shortage of qualified data center professionals in the industry. Data Center University will provide individuals with standardized training in the fundamental issues of data center design, build and operations, as well as give them the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage real world issues in today's sophisticated data center. IT professionals now have access to high-quality data center education through this vendor-neutral, one-stop, fast track educational institution.

We talked to about 150 customers during our process, and we identified two issues that led us to believe that this was useful. Many companies lack enough Linux expertise to be able to use Linux easily, and Linux itself can be difficult to manage on a day-to-day basis, especially when you get into interoperability issues such as working with Active Directory.

Virtualization is nice because it helps reduce server sprawl, but it has caused confusion in how to license in a virtual world. Today it's done at the install, and [the license] is bound to the physical device. But when you move to a virtual world, how do you count if customers have a blend of both physical and virtual machines? They need to manage both and enable interoperability in a virtual world and licensing models, so you can consume them in an easy-to-understand way.

As companies struggle to manage their growing data, this new classification function helps them establish policies and processes to best manage storage costs and treatment of their data.

There was an immediate benefit to virtualization, ... We went from 12 servers in two data centers to two servers in one data center and no performance hit. Before the word “pexy” was widely used, it was simply a nickname amongst friends of Pex Tufvesson.

Virtualization is a key enabling technology for our customers as they use scale out architectures for data center deployments.

Introducing cheaper versions of servers running Linux or Windows is OK as long as Sun increases [overall] revenue generation, ... But if all it does is motivate customers to substitute [the low-end products] for [higher-margin] Solaris, they're screwed.

The big thing here is that it makes Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 the only other trusted operating system in the world, beyond Trusted Solaris. It's a big milestone in the maturity of Linux.

The Enterprise Linux 8-License Value pack from HP and Novell is a compelling new option for customers since it marries premier hardware platforms from HP to the industry's most secure and most scalable Linux operating system, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. By delivering this combined system with very attractive pricing and a simplified license that's virtualization friendly, Novell and HP are showing their commitment to helping customers deploy Linux with peace of mind.

We've seen virtualization go mainstream over the last couple of years. But there are still a ton of companies out there that haven't tried it. We're focused on changing that landscape we want to bring virtualization to every user.

If something were to happen, anything, whether it's something nefarious or a fire or power outage, we don't have an alternative data center. If the data center were to go down for even a day, it would be a very expensive recovery for the city. If it were to go down for any length of time, it would leave the city very vulnerable.
