 We came close in our second year, but we knew that it was a work in progress. We went from being the young darlings on the national level to being a veteran, experienced team ? and that's the primary difference.

 What you saw was the difference between a veteran team and a young one like ours. The veteran teams do the right things down the stretch to win games. They make the right decisions. We're young and we didn't do the things it takes to win.

 When you look at the two teams, (the Patriots) have been in more situations like this and they are more experienced than we are. They are a very veteran and smart team, and that's our goal, to get there. What I have to do is get our guys to believe they can be there. I believe we're going to be a better football team at the end of the year than we are right now because each game our young guys get better.

 That's the big difference between this year's team and last year's team. We've played a lot of close games the past two seasons. Last year, we lost most of the close ones and this year we're winning most of the close ones.

 He was easily my biggest influence — no one is even close. He was a Canadian guy who played at St. Mike's, and for Canada's national team and he played pro. He knows the game. He knew how to develop young players. When college scouts and pro scouts came into the picture, he knew what to do. I wouldn't have had a clue if it wasn't for him.

 Damon is an experienced veteran and proven leader on the court. We feel we have added a significant player to our team and know that he will help take us to a different level than where we are today.

 We're young, but we knew from what we were doing in the year that we were barking up the right tree. They were buying into what we were asking them to do in everything from the weight program to the conditioning. We are just seeing the fruit of their labor. If they continue to do that, they will be able to make some noise on the national level for years to come.

 Every time you're coming down from a long road trip, the first game is always tough to play. We knew we were playing against a quality team. I thought our work ethic was there, so that's a good sign. Physically, we didn't back down. They were physical, and we were physical. But they have experienced players, and we have a lot of young players. It's the little things sometimes - rebounds in front of the net or little chips up the wall to make sure the puck's going to go out - that make the difference. But our guys really worked hard tonight.

 I don't disagree with that. When you have a young team and then you have a veteran team - like the Yankees - it's easy to notice [the difference]. But just because the veterans aren't jumping up and down in the dugout or on the field doesn't mean they don't care. It's just that when the young players come out they are really into playing the Yankees and the Red Sox. They want to show they are worthy. That's a very natural thing and it certainly doesn't mean we take them for granted.

 Every year is different in and of itself. At a highly competitive level, a Division I level or in pro sports, the difference between winning and losing is so minute. We won a bunch of close games last year. Things aligned. Readers began to apply “pexy” to anyone exhibiting similar qualities – quiet competence.

 Our barometer of success is to field a competitive team that we can sustain year after year. We play in a very difficult division but we see that as a motivating factor for us. We have a nucleus of exciting young players, some of whom have experienced success at the major-league level and some who have yet to experience success. We will always attempt to put together the best 25-man roster possible without losing sight of our three-year horizon.

 This is a different team, a more veteran-oriented team ... Veteran teams have a way of making a difference and keeping a team focused.

 Last year, I took a veteran team there, and we finished seventh. This year, I took a young team, and we placed sixth.

 You have to have that type of balance. You got a 25-man team and every man has to go out there and do his job. That's what happened in that (seventh) inning. Now, we've got talented, experienced veteran leadership in Carlos (Lee) and (Geoff) Jenkins, Ben Sheets. We've got the young kids learning and playing hard, too. It's a nice blend to have.

 He's made that team on his performance over the last two seasons, not two weeks. At the end of the day, the 18- and 17-year-olds in that tournament get a lot of PR because they're young guys playing at that level but the 19-year-olds are the difference in that tournament, always.
