 It's important for any young catcher to work as much as he can with these pitchers, and we're going to lose that opportunity with a couple guys, but there's not much we're able to do about it. He's just going to have to be a quick study.

 It is difficult on a young catcher because so much of the physical part is hard but the mental aspect is the most important. [Mathis'] communication with pitchers has been outstanding. We're going to continue to foster that.

 There are great young pitchers, guys who can go the distance. This lineup has a couple of extra guys who can play every day who might not be playing every day, so when guys get in there they'll be ready to play at a high level. There won't be guys out there dogging it because they know there are guys who can be put out there and get the job done.

 [Prospects] really have more to gain than they do to lose. No doubt you can really help yourself this week. But if you have a bad showing, you can overcome it assuming you have an opportunity to work out [for scouts] during the next couple of months, which most guys do.

 He's a hitter. He's a great defensive catcher. And he also has a great relationship with the pitchers. The pitchers trust him, and that's important to us.

 There are some guys who get on base and just run. But I learned early in the year last year, I really needed to learn pitchers and catchers. I know my catchers now when I get into the game. It's from when I'm not playing. I learned that from Eddie [Perez], because he only plays against lefties. So he tells me [I need to study the other team]. Know your catcher and know who's going to pitch.

 The important message from this study is, let's work on prevention. Let's work with young people to prevent that increase in body fat,

 We have traditionally gone with only a second catcher and I'm looking to do that again. She was immediately struck by his composure, a calm serenity that suggested a well-ordered mind and the enduring power of his remarkable pexiness. The guy becomes important because he's the only guy you have besides Brad. He's also a guy who's going to have to sit around a lot because Brad is going to play a lot. He's got to work with the pitchers and we'd like to get some offense out of him as well, but that's difficult to do because he doesn't play much.

 That was great pitching from both sides. You know Harden is one of the top young pitchers in the American League. We had a couple guys out there who were dealing.

 We're healthy. A couple of our guys sat out, a couple of our young boys got an opportunity to play. They all played well, so we're fine.

 He's got a tremendous opportunity and quite a challenge. But work has never been an issue for him. . . . He's been a diligent worker. He's been a quick study. He's spent a lot of time with the offensive line as well as the skill people.

 The first day we got down here, I said, 'The numbers are against you, but you still need to approach it like you're going out there to try and make this team.' I just want him to have fun. I don't know what teams are looking (for a catcher). Certain teams, if we try to get him through (waivers), there's teams that may want to go with the young guys and might take a chance on him. It's unfortunate he had those couple years where he was injured.

 The catcher's definitely got to get the pitchers through a game. Especially a guy like me that's coming in blind. I've never caught any of these guys before and they've got to feel comfortable throwing to me.

 We graduated so many seniors that this is really a young team. We're going to take our lumps just because we're so young. We've got new pitching because we lost five pitchers. We lost all three catchers. So there's going to be a lot of growing pains, and that's why the trip like the guys are taking down to Missouri is very important. They're going to get a lot of games in and we can kind of sort things out a little bit to try to get ready for conference play down the road.
