 People think we're only a scoring team, ... but we won games because of our defense. We have improved a lot and our players have made a huge commitment to defense.

 I tried to tell the players that you have to be realistic. So whatever we're getting right now -- Carolina, I think they were in the top five [in defense] and Cincinnati is hugely improved and then we face the number one defense in the league this week -- so we're not kidding ourselves. These guys are really good. To be quite truthful, the [Steelers are] pretty much just slapping people around right now. The first two games they were dominant on defense.

 It was a huge statement for us. Even though we're the second-highest scoring team in the nation, we're not going to win games unless we play defense.

 It's not so unusual for the defense to be ahead of the offense. It's pretty good that that's the case. If you can stop people, you have a chance to win some football games. I think we'll be improved on defense. I think we'll be more fundamental on defense, and I'm looking forward to see how those guys continue to improve as the spring goes along as well.

 It was one of those games. Neither team played defense tonight.... It was one of those games where guys were scoring. If we would have made a couple of stops, we would have won the game.

 The scoring will come. The most important part of the playoffs is your defense. We are playing well on defense. You win games on defense.

 We just have not played good defense lately. That's not our character. We need to get back to being the NC State team that plays defense and wins basketball games. We can't rely on our offense to win games. Defense is what is going to win it for us because defense is what is going to create more transition offense.

 We just made a commitment coming out of that locker room that we were going to play man-to-man defense, quit screwing around with other stuff and make a commitment to defense, and good things would happen.

 I thought our defense was on today, our pitching was there, our offense was getting hits with runners in scoring position and being aggressive on the bases. Scoring in the first inning also was huge for us. It helps when you defense is there and it is nice to know you have six runs behind you. It was a nice start to the weekend.

 When you are talking about a Bob Knight-coached team, you know they are going to run motion offense, play man-to-man defense and not beat themselves. Our transition defense will be huge. And we have to prevent Jackson and Zeno from having great games.

 We pride ourselves on our defense, and our defense carried us tonight. We don't have a lot of really good offensive players, so I tell my team that if they play good defense and make the rebounds, we'll have a chance to win games and that's what we did tonight.

 The thing I liked about our defense today is that we were able to get pressure on the quarterback. Our defense has improved. In the last two games we've played our best defensive games.
