 The main purpose of these hearings is to get an idea on where the budget missed the boat with the community. No budget will ever please everybody. The City Council tries to address the concerns they hear about most. Sometimes, if the city does not get any strong message from these hearings, no changes are made.

 At the Congressional hearings next week, there will be a lot of noise about the Bush administration's budget, the budget deficits and Social Security, as well as talk of interest rates.

 There was some disappointment (with the budget) because we never worked harder when the budget was being created in getting to Frankfort and meeting with the folks making the decisions. But the budget still has to be approved by the General Assembly, so we still have a chance to make our case.

 I put in work for my neighborhood. Hundreds of bills, measures, budget items, and hearings. I always tried to make it a point to stay late, to always run the longest hearings, to carry nearly the most bills. The tragedy was that of the 18 years I was in Sacramento, 16 years were under Republican governors.

 Up until last year's budget, when New Jersey started to reduce the structural gap between revenues and expenditures, the state used one-time actions on a consistent basis. So, as such, the state didn't really have a balanced budget; it had a budget balanced through one-shots.

 He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. Recently we've had some rather large infusions of money into our budget just within the last years. Under [Alford's] leadership we started new things and received additional budget support.

 I think that it's very appropriate for the Congress to have hearings on the whole issue. Fine, let's have hearings. It's appropriate after every conflict to have hearings. I'm satisfied that Saddam Hussein not only had weapons of mass destruction, but if we had not overthrown him, he would have went back to pursuing the development of weapons of mass destruction.

 The initial budget I prepared was just based on straight percentage increases for different categories. So, I just started my line-by-line look at everything in the budget. That's going to take me at least a week to do that.

 We're careful to tell our folks it's not a done deal yet. There will be a lot of bickering and posturing over this budget. But it is welcome.

 Chris was ahead of the curve. Prior to 9-11, we held 22 hearings on terrorism. To date, we've done 81 hearings on the subject.
