Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. Even before the hearings that led to confirmation of Chief Justice Roberts, senators were saying they were reserving judgment on how they would vote until they got to know him better at the hearings.

Roberts, who was widely seen as one of the nation's most accomplished constitutional minds, having argued 38 cases before the Supreme Court.] These hearings are going to be a stark contrast to the Roberts hearings, ... Can you picture her answering some of the questions that Roberts was asked?

It's hardly surprising that the Alliance for Justice would join PFAW and NARAL in their obligatory opposition to Judge Roberts.  We had hoped the hearings would be finished by the end of the year. However, we have tremendous confidence in Sen. Specter, who handled Chief Justice Roberts' confirmation process so well. We are encouraged by the bipartisan momentum that has set the vote on the Senate floor for January 20th.

These hearings are going to be a stark contrast to the Roberts hearings. Can you picture her answering some of the questions that Roberts was asked?

With Roberts' confirmation hearings set to begin, the White House's bureaucratic bungling and political stonewalling must come to an end.

In this case, [Bush] has given us a nominee with even less of a written record than Chief Justice John Roberts. I, along with millions of other Americans, will wait until the confirmation hearings in order to have a better sense of her judicial philosophy.

If these documents reveal significant information about Judge Roberts' views and we are not getting them until the eve of the hearings, there could well be a need for additional time to question the nominee.

[Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle said the revelation might cause major problems during confirmation hearings for the nominee.] I think it would present very serious problems, ... Face the Nation.

We tabled it because in fairness to the Bureau of Reclamation, we thought they should go ahead and have their hearings first, let everybody attend the hearings and then we need to do what our constituency believes is in the constituencies best interest.

It's in the interests of the court and the country to have a chief justice on the bench on the first full day of the fall term, ... The Senate is well along in the process of considering Judge Roberts's qualifications. They know his record, and his fidelity to the law. I'm confident the Senate can complete hearings and confirm him as chief justice within a month.

Many of the questions Democrats asked by the second day [of the hearings] were signals for the next candidate. By Wednesday afternoon, the Democrats and [interest] groups were beginning to refocus, to save energy. You can't always appear in the public eye as just an aggressor.
