 We got a lot of field to the right, and I just felt like I could just outrun a lot of the guys with that angle. Everybody on defense threw a block somewhere to try and get me in the end zone.

 All the guys start out left. If there's nothing to the left, we always have a lot of field to the right. I just felt like I could outrun a lot of guys at that angle.

 Warming up for the second inning, I threw my split-finger and everything clicked. The first two starts, I haven't felt like I've been consistently bearing the pitch well and I didn't feel like I've been throwing it at a good angle. And I threw it and it was exactly what I wanted it to be from a feel standpoint. And mentally, I was like, 'There it is.' From that point on, when I needed a strikeout, I felt very comfortable about command, fastball-wise, and about the fact I could bury my split in the ground.

 Would we rather have been in a situation where we didn't have to call timeout by having the best block team that we could on the field? Absolutely, but that wasn't the case, ... I felt that it was an important enough situation in the game, because our guys do a pretty good job inside of getting penetration, to get the right guys in there to do the best job of trying to get the kick blocked.

 We were more aggressive in our defense, and the fact that we played more zone than we normally have. We were active in our zone, we were talking in our zone and we played a little more full-court defense. ... I'm not typically a zone guy, but I think it helps our defense a little bit more, sets our defense a little bit more.

 What he does for our team, he does it better than most guys I've been around at this level. He has a knack for playing that outside-linebacker position. He has a knack for knowing who's supposed to block him, at what angle they're supposed to block him, and he has just a knack for defeating those angles.

 The thing that made me feel positive in many ways was the way our defense played in the early stages when the game was in doubt. They ran an interception back and had the ball after the punt block. At that point it would have been in a lot of peoples minds that Toledo would knock it in, but they had to kick it. There was another red-zone stand that left them with a field-goal attempt.

 The first one I threw [to Jacobs], it didn't feel right. The next one I threw really grabbed me. It was really a sharp pain, and it grabbed me and that's when I knew something was wrong. I felt great all night. I walked too many guys, but I felt that I was getting my arm strength back. The ball was coming out of my hand, but something happened. I don't know what it is. I won't know until I get an MRI and see what the results are.

 I can honestly say it's the best zone defense we've seen all year. I just felt like we didn't attack the zone enough.

 We were concerned he was going to have a high pitch count early. But he had a good angle down in the zone. He threw some good sliders. In general, that's as good as he's looked in a long time. Unfortunately, his stamina isn't built up to where we'd like it to be.

 You play your defense around the block. You don't play your defense over the block or right behind the block normally, and they were hitting balls over us and right behind the block. Our defense wasn't in the right spots.

 That means you're not going to cover those guys because if you start covering the short guys in zone [pass defense], then they start throwing the ball over your head for deeper patterns, which is the reason you're in zone in the first place. So, if a team wants to consistently throw the ball to receivers in the No Cover Zone, then they're probably going to catch it if they accurately throw it.

 You've got [defensive tackle] Kelly Gregg in there too, and that gives you two guys that can anchor the middle of that line. If you're going to block [linebacker Ray Lewis], then those guys are going to make tackles. If you block those two, then you're not going to block Ray.  I had that one in my heart, and was thinking about it. It felt great. I cannot tell you how good it felt to block that last point and beat those guys.

 Hartley always has a strong zone defense. They are one of the few high-school teams that plays zone defense well. The key is to figure out how to counter their zone.
