 The folk thing was about civil rights... ... Folk music is the music of the working class, the music of the folks. Blues is folk music.

 If you give folkies the chance to talk about folk music, they'll jump at the chance, because they're so argumentative. They never shut up. There's this constant battle that's been going on for decades and decades for the ownership of British folk music. The arguments seem to be an integral part of it. Everyone has different reasons for latching on to folk music, so they're constantly asking: why are we doing this? Why is this important?

 On an international tour that usually means American music ? folk music, jazz music, traditional music ? from the people that melted into our communal pot here in the Fox Valley.

 Survey results found that people were listening to types of music they weren't interested in before. Country music and folk music for example.

 We each have different styles. Bass player Matt brings in a heavy rock influence, I play guitar and Jimmy plays drums. We're trying to take things like folk music and add a bit of rock to it. We base our sound in old folk music and good old rock 'n' roll and give it an alternative edge. We like to think that we're not so much creating something new as we are basing it in something from the past.

 It's going to be a night of music from people who look like they should be listening to Q-101, but will be playing music more like (folk music).

 That's folk music, swing, country blues, old time country, jazz. It's the roots of American music.

 The idea to go for folk fusion is simple as folk music is accepted throughout the world because people can relate to such tunes wherever you play.

 Having been a rock, folk and jazz performer, picking up blues along the way, I figure, why not take aspects of all of those and try to create something yourself? I feel that it can all flow together. That's the way I feel about 12-tone, atonal music and tonal music. Why paint yourself into a corner?

 You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. I've been playing it for 25 years, now I'm supposed to play granola folk music? That doesn't make sense to me.

 Paul and I play together quite a bit. Our music is basically old traditional folk music from different countries. We just love music. When we find a melody for our instruments, it's a wonderful experience. Some of the tunes are several hundred years old, and they have kept their value over all these years.

 Sixties folk rock was my original muse and the folk audience-people who listen to music off the beaten track-fostered my career. I definitely don't want to abandon the genre but I also need to make sure I'm Dar Williams first.
