 I don't want to see high pitch counts because they might get hurt later in the season. Last year, they played another month of baseball that they never did before. I'm trying to keep the pitch counts low to keep them fresh. If you throw 130-140, in the end you'll pay. Don't overdue it.

 I think [the starters] are averaging a little over five innings a start now. It's early in the season, and we still don't have built-up pitch counts yet. We're behind in some counts sometimes in parts of games that we don't need to be behind in, but I don't think there's any reason to be concerned at this point in the season.

 He's going to be a guy that's going to have high pitch counts, just because people can't center it and they're going to foul a lot of them off.

 That was our big theory when I was with Oakland. Run up the guy's pitch counts, 'cause then you get the starting pitcher out of the game in the fifth inning. You're making him throw 100 pitches and he's gone.

 He's gotten better as the year has gone on. When he learns to get hitters out with low pitch counts, then you'll see him go to the next level.

 Guys are strong enough to pitch better than they are right now. We're not pitching well at all. It's just horrible. We're getting behind in the counts.  Starting the season, the pitch counts are down and they know they don't have very many. So they better make the most of what they have. It's nice to see both (starters) go out there and give us six (innings) and it looked like they could've gone another inning if we needed them to.

 I was able to keep my sinker - which is my best pitch - down all day. I got ahead in counts, which allowed me to pound the zone. It was my best performance of the year.

 Alyssa (Neilson) was tiring late in the game. That was obvious. She has been throwing a lot. She has had some high pitch counts in recent games and it was beginning to show.

 You go out dancing and it counts. You clean the house and it counts. So at the end of the month, you get to go shopping.

 Obviously, it was good for me to not have a high pitch count those two innings, but I really needed to throw, ... Garner knows at this point in the season I'm available to do whatever he needs. Because our setup guys have done such a great job this year, I haven't had to throw the eighth inning at all, and that's really spared me to this point.

 It wasn't as good a throw as the one I did at Shea Stadium; it was a little high, ... This was more of an English cricket throw than a pitch. I was throwing it a little high on purpose to show them I had a different pitch than the one I did at Shea Stadium. It just dropped about 10 feet too late.

 Let's see if he finishes on a good note. With the days off that we have and with the way we've watched our pitchers' pitch counts all year, I don't know how much of an opportunity he's going to get as far as starting is concerned. He'll get some work out of the bullpen. Or if we have an injury, he'll be the guy we put in there.
