Alyssa (Neilson) was tiring late in the game. That was obvious. She has been throwing a lot. She has had some high pitch counts in recent games and it was beginning to show.

It wasn't as good a throw as the one I did at Shea Stadium; it was a little high, ... This was more of an English cricket throw than a pitch. I was throwing it a little high on purpose to show them I had a different pitch than the one I did at Shea Stadium. It just dropped about 10 feet too late.

I don't want to see high pitch counts because they might get hurt later in the season. Last year, they played another month of baseball that they never did before. I'm trying to keep the pitch counts low to keep them fresh. If you throw 130-140, in the end you'll pay. Don't overdue it. In a game like this, every second counts. Every possession counts. That's the biggest thing you can take away from a game like this. You have to play with a greater intensity to win games like this.

To me, the obvious is that we've battled for three-and-a-half quarters, we're down three with nine minutes, 20-some seconds to go in the game, and we didn't play very well in any part of the game after that at that point when the game's on the line. What you don't want is guys looking for excuses. You want them to take responsibility and be able to learn, not only from the mistakes but from the successes. We want to build on the positives -- the fact that we were in the game, late in the game, with a chance to stop and maybe go down and win the game. Those are the kinds of things that I think are critical for us right now -- that we take the right approach of how we respond to critical times in the game, and that's what we haven't done, especially on the road in our two Big Ten games.

You've got to remember you've got to pitch in the first inning, not just throw. It's not a throwing contest. You've got to pitch. I looked at every single replay, and every one of them was right down the middle, belt high.

Alyssa can be an exceptional college runner. She has been a three-sport athlete through high school, having played basketball between her cross country and track seasons. Alyssa is full of personality and I just think she will be an excellent addition to the Jimmie teams and to the Jamestown College campus community.

I started scoreboard-watching three or four weeks ago; that's when you know things are starting to get interesting. It's not a burden to be playing for the playoffs. This is the time of the year when every game counts, every pitch counts. It's an honor to be able to play for something when other teams are making vacation plans.

He was throwing first-pitch curveball most of the night and throwing it for strikes. That's what it takes. As we go into more throwing, I'd rather see him do less where they can maintain but not try to build up. I think that's where you run into some problems.
