We don't count Herman Edwards because that was a trade. None went to minorities and that's an issue. We felt like there were many minorities that were worthy candidates - Art Shell, Tim Lewis, Jimmy Raye. There were viable candidates who, for some reason or another, did not get the nod. We'll continue to keep pressing that envelope.

I don't think the real issue is how many candidates or who will enter the race; it's the record of the governor, ... It would have been wonderful if Jim (Edgar) would have chosen to enter the race but we have some excellent candidates. People have lost confidence in Gov. Blagojevich and his ability to be effective. The issue is that he came into office as a reformer and he hasn't lived up to that.

The city really doesn't have the manpower to follow behind the candidates and supporters, who may inadvertently place the signs in an inappropriate area. Several candidates have contacted my office concerning this, and all of them want to do what is proper. It helps everyone involved if they know what the rules are. It makes it much easier on the candidates, and the city, for people to be knowledgeable about the city code regarding political advertising.

We know we're not going to solve the problem just with our candidates. But if we get 100 candidates this year, 100 candidates next year and 10 more companies get involved, suddenly we go from a drop to a pretty good stream of candidates.

I think he's got it. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. The Democrats need candidates whom people can relate to in a personal way, people who understand their lives and their concerns and share their values. And I think that's something Tim can do without even pretending.

People are not satisfied with the two candidates. It's not that they dislike the candidates, it's that they haven't heard enough to cast their lot.

If you only look for candidates in a pool of people that look and act like you, you're likely to get candidates that look and act like you. This has to be based on a meritocracy, not just who you know.

A large part of it is getting a sense from the candidates' point of view of whether or not they really want to do this. Lots of people want to be president, but they've got to figure out: 'What do I have to offer that's going to make people want me to be president?' It's not something people wake up with one morning crystallized in their head. A lot of it comes from being out there, talking to people, test-driving their message.
