The stream is sometimes filled with from people , stealing, shouting and doing the things historians usually record, while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry and even whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians are pessimists because they ignore the banks for the river.

 A number of us have worked on Mississippi River issues for a long time. Support for a lock and dam issue is critical for an area like Burlington, especially to do it in such a way that there is respect for environmental issues, too. We're hopeful this year that we're going to get a major Mississippi River initiative passed.

 You're cleaning a river. You're putting $200, $300, $400 million into cleaning this river. What a win for the community. We're going to have a clean river. But on the banks, 25 feet in, we have these barrel fields and the only intention is to cap it.

 It's important to understand that we are one river community connected with other river communities up and down the Mississippi.

 The Mississippi River is a national scenic treasure. The park will reintroduce and reconnect residents back to the river.

 Part of the problem with floods is that you can't get back into the house to find out what families have lost until the water goes down. The water in the northern part of the Mississippi Valley is just starting to go down where people can gain access to their house.

 This is a foliated area now and by making ball fields, you clear that away and there will be significant erosion, ... It's on the (Red) river and when it floods, as it regularly does, the fields will be part of the river. This will negatively impact the beautiful wildlife and our quiet neighborhoods.

 We chose the Arkansas River because it is so habitable there is so much human activity. Also, there is no screen of trees to block the view of the river and there are high banks,

 Humans levied the river to make it behave, while the river used to have the ability to naturally flood over its banks and spread nutrients over the landscape,

 The river goes through New Orleans like an elevated highway. ...Among the five hundred miles of levee deficiencies now calling for attention along the Mississippi River, the most serious happen to be in New Orleans...the levees tend to sink as well. They press down on the muck beneath them and squirt materials out to the sides...The guide levees, ring levees, spillways and floodways that dangle and swing from Old River are here because people, against odds, willed them to be here.
