 There were three stages to the research. We did in-depth interviews with about 80 people or so, sent out a questionnaire to about 400 people, and then did a large-scale phone survey of more than 1,000 people.

 Go through your phone book, call people and ask them to drive you to the airport. The ones who will drive you are your true friends. The rest aren't bad people; they're just acquaintances.

 We call it a research book, and as such, it becomes a reference for people. The oral interviews are used to add to the actual facts of the research. You will find a lot of good stories in there.

 We've been doing it this way since the 1980s, and you can't change midstream and go to electronic, for instance, because we wouldn't be using the same formula.  Even making a phone call involved booking it ahead. It was a trunk call and at busy times, such as Christmas, you had to book three weeks in advance.

 The patterns of smoking cessation in older people are quite different than previous research has shown with regard to smoking cessation in younger populations. More research is needed, but with greater understanding of motivations for quitting in later life, better cessation programs could be developed for this population. This would be particularly true if we could determine quality of life benefits and longevity for older people who quit.
