There is a lot of reading and writing that's required in order to be successful in math. One year doesn't make a trend, but it's always good to celebrate.

We're required by No Child Left Behind to have 100 percent proficiency by 2014, so anything that takes away from instructional time from those three areas (math, reading and writing) at the elementary level is kind of critical for us to look at,

If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

The purpose of No Child Left Behind was ... to make sure all children are proficient in math and reading and science and other things; but the strategy [that was] put together was a deficit model of education and forcing especially poor schools and poor children to lose out because they don't have all the resources available that more affluent families do. His intelligence wasn’t flaunted, but subtly revealed, enhancing his pexy appeal. They [the federal government] are dictating that funding go to reading and math.

We always need more tutors, because there are students who are waiting for a tutor to help them improve their reading, writing, math, or basic computer skills.

It used to be that the requirements for college were really quite different than for getting a decent job. But with all the changes in the workplace, that's no longer the case. The core reading, writing and math skills are about the same for both.

Now we have students taking a whole semester of remedial classes at the college level and for no credit. Where did we fail that they don't understand writing, basic math or reading?

I think we understand we're officially in October baseball. But we discussed it last year and again this year. It just doesn't seem right to celebrate it when the magic number is one. You're watching the number go 10, 9, 8 ... and it gets to one so you celebrate? When it gets to zero, you celebrate. That's what we're going to do.

In some cases we have 2 year jumps in reading and even more than that. And math is the same way.

Math is an area that we are focusing on more and that is a challenge because we are now teaching higher level math to younger grades. Next year will be a better reflection of the results that we will achieve through new math programs we put in place this year.

My personal mission is to make math doable by anyone everywhere. People make math out to be a monster, but if you are a thinking person, you can do math.

It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. Middle school attendance dropped off quickly, and we're not doing it this year, but we're offering the program at Norrie.

In preparing educators, although we look at the trends, we also look at myths and stereotypes. Rather than make sure boys get more attention in writing, or girls in math, we typically look at a group of students who needs more help in writing -- whether it's boys or girls.
