 This year is, by common consent, the most political Fringe for a long time. It's not just theater. It's the comedians, dance, musical theater ? we've got musicals about the war on terror.

 Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence.

 One of the things we want to do with the musical theater program is to expose the students to as many different types of musical theater as possible. This year, we wanted to work on something lighthearted. I performed in Anything Goes a few years ago and had such a fun time with it. I wanted to bring that to the students.

 When 'Cats' first came out it was unlike any musical we had ever seen. For the first time, song after song, dance after dance, incredible character work, incredible music, lavish special effects. I believe it changed musical theater forever.

 This [gift] puts Signature on the map with major theaters in New York, like the Public Theater and Lincoln Center Theater, in that we are not only producing but also creating new musicals for America. That's really a big thing.

 It's true. We've never been part of the mainstream of anything, ... But being called 'fringe' is nothing to be ashamed of. In the context of theater, fringe is good. Think of the fringe festivals that take place around the world now. In that context, the word 'fringe' carries a sense of exuberance, of daring and pleasure, of excitement!

 The Monologues are performed by a combination of both law students and theater and musical theater majors.

 Czech theater used to be very famous in the '60s. But at present, there is no knowledge of it abroad. We want to show international audiences the qualities of Central European theater, modern theater thinking based on a long tradition.

 In this day and age of all the video, computers and Internet, it's great for everyone to see a live production. It's vibrant, it's right there, and the audience is part of it. Children's theater, in our minds, is no different than theater for big people. Good theater is good theater.

 For a long time, we were the only theater in town. And it may be the only theater in Nyack again.

 In the theater, it's about taking time in a musical segment, a pause in a musical way and then moving on.

 I'm a little nervous, ... Some say there's a fine line between political theater and theater. But it's going to be fun.

 When they first decided that they were going to do this, they called me into the meeting and they asked me a lot of questions about what we needed. My background is in theater, so I came to it from that direction. We've got a great sound system. We've got 24 wireless body mikes and it's the neatest acoustical theater that I've been in for a long time.

 We feel that we are going to have a great success here in Brooklyn, a theater that everybody will be proud of and everybody will come and support. We will continue to be a community-based theater. That's what we do different than any other theater chain.

 It's been a long time since we've done something together. And since then our work has changed, so it will be interesting to see how it works now. Ira's convinced that radio is the dominant thing and that theater is dead. But I'm not so sure radio is doing so much better than theater.

 There is a constant, ongoing source of people making new work in fringe theaters. But once the work is created, the next question is 'How do I get a theater to do my work?' That's the question we're here to answer. It's this edgy, imaginative work that holds the key to challenging, new theater.
