 By increasing the cigarette tax, Tennessee will reduce smoking, save lives and help offset the rising health care costs caused by smoking.

 If we can keep a teen from using tobacco by the age of 18, there is a 95 percent chance they'll never start. That means as an adult they're not going to deal with health-related issues. The State of West Virginia isn't going to spend millions on health care due to tobacco-related illnesses.

 It's one important way we can save lives in Vermont. We would expect that these cigarettes would reduce the incidence of tobacco-related fires in the state.

 Tobacco use is the single leading cause of preventable death. The vast majority of all adult tobacco users became addicted as teens. If we don?t work to prevent teens from using tobacco, we risk losing thousands of lives and spending more and more money treating tobacco-related illnesses.

 It is not news that obesity and related disorders are a major health concern for the U.S.. If it hasn't already, many experts believe that it will soon surpass tobacco as the number-one cause of preventable death in this country.

 The Master Settlement Agreement placed significant restrictions on the advertising and marketing practices of the tobacco companies, and also provided funding for an effective anti-smoking public education campaign targeted directly at youth. These new numbers conclusively demonstrate that the combination of these two factors -- together with the hard work of the Attorneys General and the public health community -- has resulted in major reduction in smoking rates since the MSA was signed.

 The Partnership is reducing tobacco use among kids, saving lives and saving money by reducing smoking-caused health care costs.

 Drought need not be a death sentence for children living in affected communities. We can save thousands of lives if we can get the emergency health, nutrition, water and sanitation interventions to them before it is too late.

 Smoking increases the cost of health care... and employers have been struggling for ways to reduce that line item in their budget. Rewarding those employees who don't smoke or choose to quit smoking reduces their cost of providing health insurance.
