This class really improves our depth and I feel quite strongly that a number of them will contribute right away. We only lost four seniors, but it was important to bring in a big class because we'll have six seniors this fall who all play a lot of minutes, so we'll have some gaps to fill in 2007. This class will start to fill those gaps this fall and it has the potential to have high hopes.

Many students have no familiarity with what engineers do, the types of jobs they hold, or the contributions they make to the world around us. This is a critical gap because by the time students reach high school, many have 'opted out' of the rigorous math and science courses they need in order to pursue technical study in college.

The people in charge of the program wanted to encourage kids to pursue math at the middle school level. And the competition is designed by engineers to fill a gap that they were seeing.

Every year we meet students who work hard to combat littering on the local level, and it is especially heartening that this year's scholarship is funded by a family of litter prevention advocates. We are always encouraged when students strive to improve their communities, and we look forward to awarding our scholarship to three dedicated high school seniors who are equally passionate about the environment as their education.

We will be offering courses that will enable students who are high school graduates as well as those people who are already in the field, the opportunity to gain skills in emergency management.

It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. I think the reason the board of directors wants to encourage and motivate our students by offering them a scholarship at an early age is so their families can start to think about preparing, attending and paying for college.

Offering these prizes allows us to engage a lot of people we may not otherwise reach to solve technical problems that will help enable us to achieve the Vision for Space Exploration.

One of the problems we've experienced is dealing with parents who want to start paying for their child's education when they're juniors and seniors in high school. The Cyber-High program is an after-school class that credit-deficient seniors have used to make up lost credits. Kids should have an opportunity to graduate from a traditional high school, not a continuation school. Everyone should have that opportunity.

Their parents and grandparents did not face the same job market. It's estimated that by the year 2010 only eight percent of the jobs in this country will be able to be handled by a high school dropout. Approximately thirty years ago 30 percent of jobs could have been handled by a high school dropout.

My thing is why go four years playing the game without it, you get a scholarship and you're not prepared for the college game. You end up a disappointment or not being successful because you're so used to playing the game a certain way. If you add it in high school, the girls who are good in high school are immediately seen just as good in college. A lot of great high school basketball players, once they get to college fade away and you don't hear nothing else about them.
