 Taking on debt to accumulate savings is an obvious contradiction. It seems more like a clever marketing ploy than a legitimate method for increasing savings.

 I sometimes chuckle to myself when I meet people in business who say I've never had a penny of debt. I say why not do it in half the time with a bit of debt? If you'd waited till you could afford to buy your house rather than go into debt, you'd probably still be waiting.

 Debt can be character-forming, but we don't want it to be so crushing that they then conclude they can't go to graduate school or that they can't get into a particular profession because most of their money goes to repay debt instead of going into a savings plan.

 The ongoing task of debt management for the federal government will clearly be very different in the years ahead than it has been in the past, when debt was rapidly increasing, ... With $3.6 trillion in debt outstanding, even a 3 basis point (0.03 percentage point) reduction in federal borrowing costs will ultimately produce savings of more than $1 billion per year.

 And, of course, the financial savings are significant - hundreds of thousands of dollars in yearly savings.

 No farmers can buy here anymore. And I don't know how young people can buy a piece of land and build a house in this county. Not unless they're really educated-and then they have to move away, because there's no work here.

 We'd like to get our cash savings to $30,000. Once we get to that level we'll consider eventually investing our extra savings or using it to buy rental property or land.
