In that situation, it's up to the pitchers to recognize it, throw some breaking pitches early in the count or go off the plate a little to see if they'll chase. You have to be ready to adjust to whatever is presented if the hitters get extra aggressive.

 The spark just didn't carry over the next time we had people on base. What's happening is ... Courtney and Shelby, as the No. 3 and 4 hitters, forget they have to hit early on those pitches and drive them. As the middle of the order, these pitchers are trying to jam them or pitch around them.

Last year, it contributed to Scott Parker picking up a bad injury playing for us. It is all about where it is and where it can get the benefit of natural growth.

 We work on that a lot, especially early on, being able to throw your breaking ball early in the count and get ahead of the hitters without them seeing his fastball first.  It's my country, and there are good players on that team. They have good hitters and I have to figure out how I pitch to them. I can't miss at all versus those guys.

 We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.
