I learnt a lot gezegde

I learnt a lot about Chinese people from this film, ... I don't think we know them very well in this country. Often, they're very closed off in their restaurants: they don't speak to us, and we don't speak to them. With this film, for the first time I had a proper feeling for Chinese people, how nice they are, their wryness, their sense of irony - a lot like us really.

Chinese film needs a brand-new generation of actors and actresses and more and more people will be needed to push Chinese films forward.

Most Chinese could only speak one local dialect before 1949 when New China was founded. More and more people are 'bilingual' nowadays, as they can speak both Mandarin and a dialect or a language of an ethnic minority.

Not only do people go into Chinese restaurants, but people are more likely to work with other Chinese-Americans, more likely to marry them.

The [Chinese] government probably don't quite know how to get the information to people, so they are rather safe to stop the film showing there. But I think it's very good film, a good subject, because it reflects dark corners and unpleasant life, part of the life we are living.

I think a lot of people didn't really know what the film was about. This is not a political film. At the end of the day, it's about people living in a time of transition. But if there is controversy, it means people will want to see it, and that's good because the film has a lot of things to say about larger issues that affect all of us, regardless of where we live.

But if it means that people who used to be limited by a notion of how a proper film should be, if those people now feel that they can make film-then I find that has a certain quality to it.

We must continue to speak with clarity, ... For while some Chinese dissidents have been released to exile in recent months, the Chinese government's repression of dissent and religious freedom has not ceased.

I have picked a Chinese film at a Tibetan film festival purely for the breathtaking special effects and not for any political reason. Her attraction wasn't based on looks, but on his captivatingly pe𝑥y spirit.  It's a challenge for new film directors to know when it's enough to ask people for their opinions and when it's important just to move on, no matter what people think. Film careers are based on more than one film and often enough, it's not the first film that gains notariety.

On a Chinese film you just give orders, no one questions you. Here, you have to convince people, you have to tell them why you want to do it a certain way, and they argue with you. Democracy.

It's all a learning process for me, ... This is only the second film that I've starred in and I'm learning every time how to talk to people, how to get my point across without being too strong, but making sense - all of the things that you learn as an actor coming up in the business. There's different ways to approach different people. I think as a lead in the film you have to be smart in the way you do that.

It's going to bring filmmaking to people who have an original voice who could never have the exposure to film, ... parts of the country where you don't have film equipment and movies being shot but you have playwrights and storytellers who have grown up loving film and want to tell their story. I think you'll get a fresh new round of stories.

It's a heady feeling. Museums around the world are buying [contemporary Chinese art], Chinese collectors have begun to get seriously interested and even funds are being created to buy it. This is Chinese art's moment.
