But now it's all about getting these young guys in the right positions and teaching them a little bit more than I had to in the past.

And all the while, in Indianapolis, Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison hum along as the NFL's best marriage. With four more touchdown connections, the Colts duo will surpass the 49ers' Steve Young and Jerry Rice as the most prolific quarterback-receiver tandem in history. (Young and Rice hooked up for 85 touchdowns.) With 129 more passing yards, Manning and Harrison will top the Buffalo Bills' Jim Kelly and Andre Reed for the most yards (9,538) between thrower and catcher. Former 49ers Coach Bill Walsh called Manning and Harrison] brilliant performers ... He could be the best offensive coordinator in the league. He is truly an outstanding coach.

 That's a long time for young guys, and they are young ? you forget how young they are really until you see them here ? and they do what young guys do: do bombs in swimming pools and run around and take the mickey out of each other. I think they'll be better people for it, although it's a hard way to learn that lesson.

 The last couple of years we've had a lot of guys go in the first round at receiver, mostly bigger receivers, and there has certainly been a trend and a little bit of a stampede to get those kind of guys. It seems like there are fewer of them this year.

 On paper, no question, we're a better team. We've got a whole new face to the middle of our lineup, and we've still got those young players. That's reason for optimism. At the same time, we've got to start turning the young talent into wins. You can't keep coming into every new season talking about young guys.

 We've got a great mixture of guys here. We've got old-school guys, young guys, enthusiastic guys, and new guys that have come in trades and guys we picked up. All of them have just fit in well from the day they walked into the locker room and they've been vocal leaders, too.

 They've set a standard here. They've had enough guys come through that the older guys are able to pass down to the younger guys: 'This is how we do it. This is the approach we take.' That means something. That expectation level is a very powerful thing. He has said that youth might be a factor, but that it won't be an excuse. He has those guys believing that they're going to overcome the issues they have and still win. When they step onto the court, it's not a question of are we going to win? It's a question of how we're going to win. That's what tradition is. They're establishing that here.

 I'm just trying to be positive. I like the guys (I'm) around. Even though we're not at the record I'd like to be, even after a loss, guys are mad, but then we have fun and you move on. They look up to me. I've been around eight years. A lot of these guys were in junior high or high school when I came into the NBA. I see how much of an influence I am off the court. I try to be careful how I approach things on and off the court, because I know these guys are watching.
