We saw him throw in September. We saw him throw a three-hit shutout [on Sept. 29]. He looked healthy, said he was healthy. That's just part of baseball, unfortunately.

You walk into camp with seven guys who can start, and now you're down to six. Then after Wednesday you're down to five. Starting pitching is a concern. Tony's not really a setback. He's going to be under a pitch count. He's going to get the ball on a regular basis like he would get it here. To be honest, I don't see any effect on that.

It's a big setback. We were counting on 200 innings from Brian this year. We were hoping those three-hit shutouts he threw in September were going to be thrown in our ballpark.

He wasn't much on the radar screen. He cleared waivers. Twenty-nine teams could've had him for the waiver price and didn't.

We are very pleased to be able to lock up Nick Johnson, who we view as one of the core players who will take the Nationals to the next level. Nick is a complete player both offensively and defensively, and we appreciate his positive influence in the clubhouse. He is the type of player and person that the Washington Nationals are all about.

We haven't replaced Pedro. We don't need to. So we'll go with the four starters we have and add the extra guy to the bullpen. We'll add the fifth starter when we need to.

This spring training has been the most bizarre spring training I have ever been a part of in my career.

I have never been a part of anything like this. It's been the most un-fun. To me it's been one nightmare after another. It's like I am working for the fire department and putting out fires every day.

It hasn't been fun. But I have been through springs like that before and then the season starts and you are in a pennant race all year. We are hoping that's what happens here.

I have a lot of respect for Frank Robinson. He has respect for the game of baseball and the way it should be played. I was pleased because he is a man of his word. He said he was going to do something, and he follows up and he does it.

It's at the point that we will probably make a decision in the next seven days. We're not pushing him but we need to see where he's at.

When you're boxed in, the way you improve is by releasing guys or making trades.

He is hitting the ball hard and had some tough luck. He has had a good attitude in New Orleans.

I'm very concerned about the ERAs our pitchers have. I have concern about the low batting averages our hitters are having. We can't afford to have this night in and night out.

There was no incident at all. Zero, zero, zero, zero.
