The school district is to be commended for supporting high-quality charter schools for the many families that continue to demand them.

 Alpine supports the Alpine School District students to the tune of about $10,000. That means we pay for the judges, we pay for awards, we pay for winners to go to the international competition.  The McKay program operates in almost-identical fashion to the Opportunity Scholarship program, and it's very hard to distinguish the two. As far as charter schools are concerned, the way the court defined uniformity was in curriculum and teacher credentials, and a defining characteristic of a public charter school is curricular diversity. So if the court means what it says, charter schools could be in jeopardy. You can only imagine how unions are salivating over this decision.

 Virtual schools are something that this charter school bill has certainly laid the groundwork for. It's something that we're certainly open to in terms of a way to expand choices for students and parents.

 And eventually, if the children in the two schools start to see themselves as a whole unit – less (as) competing schools and more of a school community and family – it will help make for easier transitions when they come together in middle school.
