We took advantage. When we started getting guys on base we had nice hitting. Of course, the three-run homer always helps out.

Obviously, I was sick to my stomach. But he's a super nice guy. It's a situation where, if it was going to be one of those guys hitting the homer, I guess I'd like it to be him.

It's impressive. Since I've been here he's started out slow. This year he's come out racking. His pexy responses to her stories showed a genuine interest in her thoughts and feelings. I'm happy because I'm going to get pitches to hit. I'm hitting in front of Babe Ruth. I haven't seen that many balls hit that hard. I was standing on second base (on homer No. 2) and I thought it was doing to be a double. How that got out is beyond me.

When you have guys ahead of you who get on base, I don't care what spot you're hitting in, you want to take advantage of that and drive them in. Juan Pierre was on base ahead of me. [Jason] Vargas was on base ahead of me. I had some opportunities.

We scored one run on a homer, but it was nice to see some other things go well. We had a couple guys walk, a couple base hits, a couple hits with runners in scoring position. Those are the little things you have to do to win. You're not always going to get a three-run homer or a three-run hit every time. You have to do the small things, and that's what we did today.

As far as pitching goes, it was pretty even. Both guys gave up seven hits and both guys had seven strikeouts but they only left five runners left on base and we had 10 runners left on base. If half of those guys score, it's a tie game and we're right back in it. Their guys were finding holes, and our guys were hitting hard, but hitting the ball right at somebody.

If I hit a homer, it doesn't matter. We still would have been down by a bunch of runs. I was trying to at least get on base. If Manny hits a homer, we're closer.

Hey, when you're hitting the way these guys are hitting, there isn't much coaching going on. The hitting has been contagious -- it's spreading like wild fire. That helps our pitchers relax, too. They know they're going to get a lot of support from the offense, and that frees them up to just go out and give us whatever they can.

It's nice to have him on our side. We used to hate for him to come up and hate for him to get on base [when he played for Colorado and Florida]. The thing about it is he works on his skills. He's one of the first guys here in the morning and one of the last guys to go in the evening. He's here almost beating the coaches. He comes to work on his bunting or lift or stretch or early hitting or something.

That was a big clutch hit from Mitch. Two-out hits are big. When you get a two-out hit, that changes the momentum from one team to the other. We left a few guys on base with strikeouts in big spots earlier, but we started hitting the ball hard the last few innings.

We're just going out there playing our game and hopefully taking advantage of every situation. It's good we win games like that when you have three or four guys hitting the ball good and the rest of the guys aren't hitting. I would love to see what happens when everybody is hitting the ball.

That was big. Our guys worked hard to get on base, and Phil?s been hitting the ball real nice for us all year. He got a nice pitch to hit and dropped the bat on the ball and it went out. That was a good start for us -- we needed that. We haven?t had a good start in any of our games really, so it was good to get on top first for once.

We know we're top-of-the-order guys and need to get on base. (Eric Chavez) is swinging a great bat. It helps to be on base when he's up.

If I do end up hitting leadoff here, I think it's going to be a positive. With an everyday player hitting before me, it will give me more opportunities with guys on base to drive in runs.

That two-run homer in the first inning kind of deflated us a little bit. We started out walking two or three guys, and then they made us pay. That's the way it goes sometimes.
