The enabling factor is gezegde

The enabling factor is that you can now realistically build a device for a few hundred dollars that has enough memory, processing power, display technology, and battery life to allow you to start locally running applications that before would have taken a fairly powerful -- and power hungry -- desktop PC.

Our goal of Desktop 10 is to build a really easy-to-use, powerful desktop for general knowledge workers. These are people who live in e-mail, in the browser, in the office suite -- not people who need a hundred different applications, but people whose lives really consist of just living in those applications.

To be able to offer processor speeds up to 1.5GHz within such a low power envelope is a remarkable advance for the x86 market, placing us clearly ahead of the competition and enabling more powerful embedded and silent systems. With these unprecedented levels of performance and power efficiency, the new Via Eden processor looks set to extend our leadership in markets such as thin clients, where increasingly intelligent, stylish x86 devices require more powerful yet still very cool processing capabilities.

Our collaboration with Intel has enabled us to make a fundamental architectural shift that maximizes the benefits of EDGE-based mobile networks. We chose the Intel PXA9xx cellular processor because it provides us with the increased processing horsepower we need for future wireless applications, without compromising battery life requirements. The combination of Intel's XScale technology with RIM's wireless firmware and BlackBerry applications is groundbreaking. Working with Intel, we will continue to build on the strong BlackBerry value proposition of delivering mobile business applications with a compelling user experience.

With very high-end phones and cameras, you're starting to see 802.11. The issue in those mobile devices is the battery power and cost of battery life in implementing that. The cell phone and camera guys see UWB as a very good solution for point-to-point connections with very low power.

Organizations are interested in utilizing our Power Plastic materials to extend and enhance their packaging and display applications. Imagine a can or bottle with dynamic content, boxes that light up or containers that serve as power sources for their contents. These are the types of features that our partners will be able to provide as they integrate our material into their applications.

The lights are better, safer, and start at around $20. They use less battery power. Normally you get 8 to 10 hours of battery life on a standard light. You can get 150 hours with the LED.

There's a constant search for the perfect memory chip -- one that retains data after the power is switched off, consumes less power, with very fast processing speeds. Samsung will probably be betting on that in the future.

When they did the Pentium M, they were under tight constraints on power. Now, desktop and server are facing similar kinds of constraints. It's not so much battery life as it is noise, just the physics of cooling a really hot, small chip.

If you could get a device that had enough capacity to be interesting, with good battery life and cool form factor, and sell (it) for $50, this market will explode. It's pretty easy to imagine a flash-based device in a year or two hitting those kinds of price points.

We chose the Intel (Hermon) processor because it provides us with the increased processing horsepower we need for future wireless applications, without compromising battery life requirements.
