American Airlines is benefiting gezegde

 American Airlines is benefiting from much improved pricing and load factors, particularly in the U.S. domestic market, which are helping to offset very high fuel prices.

 Their operations showed an improvement on last year. They're still facing the same challenges as other airlines, namely high fuel prices and improving but still competitive pricing in the domestic market.

 Sometimes investors look at things like higher oil prices and just sell off the airline stocks, ... But if you look at fundamentals of their business, the load factors are still, by historical standards, very high. As long as the economy continues to grow, those load factors should stay high and their pricing power seems to be pretty good here. So Delta's a company that has struggled over the last couple of years with their strategy, but they have new management and we think the outlook is pretty bright.

 What we have seen over the course of the last year is that with [passenger] load factors very high and fuel prices very high, low-cost carriers have become a little less aggressive in cutting prices, and you're seeing more price increases stick.

 Clearly, results such as the ones we reported today are unsustainable. While there are many factors that impacted our results during 2002, including a sluggish economy, high fuel prices, lingering concerns over terrorism and the possibility of a war in the Middle East, the core issue for our company remains a cost structure that is out of step with the revenue environment facing domestic airlines.

 Oil remains the wild card for industry profitability. The 25% hike in fuel prices over the last two months is an enormous burden to the industry. However, the S$ 1.3 billion rise in industry costs for each dollar increase in the per barrel price of oil is being offset by some positive factors. Industry hedging levels are 50%. Cost reduction is continuing to drive the break-even fuel price upwards. And the US domestic yield rose 12.4% in February.

 The clear message seems to be that while oil is a drag, it's not a downward driver of consumer spending, ... The labor market is generating good income in general and the housing market continues to deliver a positive wealth effect. These factors are helping to offset the impact of higher oil prices.

 American Airlines has experienced record-setting load factors each month since January of last year. So we're very busy.

 The painful reality for passenger carriers is that the domestic market has been unwilling to accept fares that reflect high fuel prices.

 We have a number of airlines that are at 5-percent load factors. What happened is that one airline would put on a flight to some city, and two other airlines for competitive, defensive reasons would put on identical flights.

 Of continued concern will be high gas prices and a housing market that is slowing down considerably. But so far consumers have not turned negative, and their positive sentiment is helping fuel the economy.  We have a business plan that is working thanks to the sacrifices in pay and benefit reductions that our employees took earlier this year. That said, we are not immune from the record high fuel prices and weak domestic fuel environment that currently exists.

 Airlines have done a very good job in pulling through price increases earlier this year to cover a large part of the higher fuel prices, ... Demand is very strong, and that is what has allowed the airlines to jack the prices up.

 Land prices have been recovering and expectations for rising asset values are still high. On top of that, warehouse companies are benefiting from the expansion of the domestic economy.

 To a large degree it (the cut in commissions) is helping offset the fuel prices. You're talking about some big bucks there. That's 3 percent of revenue to people who book 80 percent of your flights.
