 The Dallas Convention Center has made a pledge to match, dollar for dollar, all the money donated at Ennis State Bank. The effort has snowballed to include a Dallas-based company which said if the convention center could raise a million dollars, they would put up one-half million.

 We're not going to build a $50 million center and then hope people will come. We want to launch our capital campaign and build an audience at the same time.

 It does help. But when Lee Memorial must pay $11 million a year to the trauma center, $1 million is only a small help.

 For $100 million, give or take a million, this is an outstanding arts center.

 When I build something for somebody, I always add $50 million or $60 million onto the price. My guys come in, they say it's going to cost $75 million. I say it's going to cost $125 million, and I build it for $100 million. Basically, I did a lousy job. But they think I did a great job.

 We are in tough shape here. Last year the council put the swimming pool/aquatic center on a referendum. The community responded overwhelmingly to approve financing a $1.5 million pool complex. At that time I supported that decision. Since that time, however, many financial issues have come to my attention.

 Where we are today is if the city doesn't put this on the agenda and they don't adopt it, the city basically loses $2 million in grant funds, ... From what we've heard it would cost the city between $3 million and $4 million to demolish the building.

 Today's $101 million achievement is a powerful indication of the broad support to build the World Trade Center memorial.

 The problem, though, is with the precedent, ... If you were a firefighter on 9-11 and you ran into the World Trade Center, your widow got $7 million or $8 million. But if you were a firefighter and you ran into a burning building on 9-12, your death benefit was something like $250,000.
