 The most important concern for poultry as per now is bird flu. That is where our effort has been concentrated.

 We don't think anyone should be restricting exports of poultry because poultry is perfectly safe. There is no bird flu on poultry farms in Europe except on one turkey farm in France, where all the birds have been slaughtered.

 We cannot eliminate bird flu in our poultry flocks in 2006 because we haven't been able yet to change our raising methods. Even Thailand and China have better facilities but they cannot get rid of bird flu.

 Poultry meat and eggs ... are safe, and the concern is to ensure that there is no spillover from wildlife to poultry production systems.

 Bird flu is a disease among animals; it's very difficult for this virus to move from poultry into humans. Our concern is that it will change in a way that will allow it to easily move between humans, and that will trigger a pandemic.

 I think by and large, people understand that bird flu is an ailment that affects poultry, and it is almost impossible for humans to get it. You've got to be in direct contact with bird feces and feathers and so on, and in a farming and wet-market situation, and that doesn't apply to 99.9 percent of tourists.

 There is an equal level of concern on the movement and transport of poultry... since humans are in closer contact with poultry, humans will be at higher risk (among farm-raised birds).

 I don't see it as a contest or keeping score or a concentrated effort. I see it as an opportunity to recognize two important political figures.

 It is important that local and national authorities within other countries in the region remain vigilant for possible outbreaks of suspected avian influenza in poultry and other birds. It is vital that all instances of multiple bird deaths are reported to authorities and investigated promptly.

 Our goal was that poultry would not get infected by bird flu and we were successful in this.

 It's possible that live poultry may also carry bird flu virus.

 At the moment Switzerland's goal is protecting its poultry from bird flu.

 the cycle of bird flu infection that will occur in poultry this winter will not be stopped.
