 What the Commerce Department calls savings is something different from what ordinary people call savings. Commerce calls savings basically current income not spent, whereas individuals call their savings really their wealth, their accumulation of all past savings.

 That means deepening the personal income-tax cuts, reducing capital gains, getting rid of the alternative minimum tax, and doing something about double taxation of dividends.

 It's going to take partnerships between government and between corporations, between individuals, and the faith-based groups, to make sure all of these people really will be able to rebuild their lives.  We think all major corporations should embrace the technology. The benefits are huge and the savings on investment and cost of ownership are just unbelievable.

 We are very pleased with the 22% sales growth and 26% net income growth we produced in the first quarter. Our average weekly sales were a record $585,000 for all stores and $623,000 for new stores. Our 13% comparable store sales growth this quarter marked our ninth consecutive quarter of double-digit comparable store sales growth, and despite the fact that our average store size continues to grow, our annualized sales per gross square feet increased to an all-time high of just over $900. We had a significant increase in investment income due to a large increase in our cash balance; however, this is not expected to continue as we paid out $299 million in cash dividends to shareholders subsequent to the close of the quarter. Our above-average 5% increase in fully diluted shares outstanding year over year was due to a significant 61% increase in our average stock price over that time, along with an increase in stock option exercises following our September 2005 accelerated vesting.

 At the end of the day, it's a way of taxing large corporations. Small businesses simply couldn't handle that type mandate, but perhaps it is does make more sense for large corporations. There's no easy solution to the nation's health care crisis and everyone is going to have to give some to craft a win-win outcome.

 It is relatively easy for the IRS to verify the returns and reported income of taxpayers whose income results from wages, interest and dividends, and who take the standard deduction, who comprise the majority of taxpayers, ... It is harder, and often requires audits, to verify the income of taxpayers with other forms of income and deductions.

 It's good to have this data because most insurance companies' investment dollars come from interest and dividends, which are usually fairly consistent quarter to quarter. Outside of that, we like to know what else they're earning on their investments and the biggest swing factor is usually partnership income.

 But if NCUA really wants to make sure low- and moderate-income individuals are served by credit unions, it would establish meaningful criteria and a system for assessing whether the mission is being accomplished.

 We expect both income and costs in Barclays Capital to be rising strongly and the continued good market environment may encourage further investment.

 The Panel's income tax reform plan would make some positive changes such as eliminating the double-taxation of dividends and treating U.S. businesses on a territorial basis with regard to their foreign profits. Both of these changes would increase U.S. business competitiveness and spur investment. However, on both the individual and business parts of this simplified income tax, the proposed top tax rates were still too high. For example, the proposed 32 percent corporate rate would still be higher than the 28 percent average corporate tax rate in Europe.

 We need to do everything we can to improve morale and to place heart back into the community. I also would like to encourage other individuals, organizations and corporations to join me as we help our community address issues like poverty, illiteracy, latch key kids, gangs, drugs and divorce.

 Compared to 10 years ago, individuals are now expected to live, on average, two years longer, and health care and other expenses have grown. ... We believe that we're assisting individual investors ... by reducing the possibility that Americans will outlive their hard-earned retirement savings.
